Guest guest
Some Progresso soups are GF - I think NE Clam Chowder is one - check it out to be sure. There are many GF soups at Whole Foods. You can make your own fish and chips at home. Use corn meal/flour to coat the fish. Whole Foods now has GF pizza crust in many stores - makes it easy to make a pizza to your liking. Not same as french bread, but helps to satisfy a pizza craving. Good luck, Roy
Guest guest
Good morning, Susan ~ First of all, how wonderful that a new baby is on the way! Congratulations! I remember those days of morning sickness when it seems that you cannot cope. . .move an inch. . .function at all. I lived on soda crackers --- strawberry milkshakes --- and poached eggs on toast. None of those things are vegan, nor gluten-free. In those days we were not a vegan nor gluten free family. Thus said. . .I wonder what ideas we can come up with to help you through this. Most of your cravings are for commercially prepared foods. Does it help to pass them by if you stop to think that most of them contain additives and chemicals that might not be best for growing a baby? I know, that doesn't help much, does it! After all, it's all " food " , right? But sometimes that type of analysis did help me stay on the healthy track. >>>I am hanging my head in shame, I am truly vegan, but something about pregnancy...... Susan, don't do this. . .you have nothing to be ashamed of. Your hormones are all mixed up and your body is craving things you've given up long ago. I'm not one who believes that if our body craves a specific food. . .that we must have a nutritional deficiency that the food contains. Let's see if we can come up with some helpful alternatives for you. Your cravings are: 1. -New England Clam Chowder (chunky campbells) Could you substitute: A.) a homemade corn and potato chowder? Chunks of potatoes, chopped onions sauteed in olive oil, cooked in some water until potatoes are soft. Add plain soy milk (or non soy alternative if needed) and frozen corn. Season with garlic powder and salt. I add raw cashews that I rinse and roast in the oven for depth of flavor (blend well in a blender with some of the soup mixture). Put soup in small containers and freeze until you have a craving. I also use the raw cashew technique for thickening other kinds of homemade soups (corn chowder; fresh broccoli soup; carrot soup; etc. . .use the same technique but change the veggies in the recipe). B.) Progresso Lentil Soup C.) Corn Chowder Corn Chowder Recipe 1/2 cup of finely chopped onion 2 cups of diced raw potatoes 1 1/2 cups of water 2 teaspoons of salt 1/8 teaspoon of pepper 2 cup of cream style corn 2 tablespoons vegan margarine, melted 2 tablespoons of gf flour (I use fava/garbanzo flour to thicken soups) 3 cups of milk alternative of choice (I use soy) Parsley Saute onion in 2 tablespoons olive oil until transparent, not brown. Cook potatoes in the water with salt and sauteed onion in covered pan until tender. Add pepper and corn. Blend the margarine and the gluten free flour, stir in milk alternative and cook until slightly thickened. Add to corn mixture: sprinkle parsley over top. Enjoy. If you'd like, add Soy Curls for a meaty texture. They are gf. 2. -the old cheap 49 cents pot pies How about a Shepherd's Pie. . .a thick vegan gravy filled with chunks of potatoes, soy curls, and mixed vegetables. Season well and then spoon into a pie shell. Add a topping of mashed potatoes and paprika. . .or a gluten free pie crust (use a mix for ease). 3. -chi chi's chimichangas I believe Chili Man's Chili is both vegan and gluten free (it does contain soy). Make chimichangas using the Chili Man Chili, Tofutti Sour Cream, and corn tortillas. We purchase the corn tortillas that are fresh off the production line at our local supermarket. They are tender, soft, and fresh (not like the prepared packaged ones). Delicious!!!!! 4. -fish and chips This one's abit more difficult. French fries with. . .a rice vinegar. . ..and a pate' of some sort. Would that help the craving? How about french fries and Tofu Pups? It's not fish, but it's meaty. 5. -campbells tomato soup with milk Think about the high sodium content of pre-made soups. . .and of retaining water. . .and maybe you'll change your mind about the craving <grin>. You can make tomato soup by blending canned tomatoes and cooking on the stove with sweet basil, sauteed onion, and a small amount of thickener (fava/garbanzo bean flour). Serve with soy milk. OR make a white sauce using fava/garbanzo flour and a milk alternative. In another saucepan heat blended canned tomatoes. Then combine the two slowly (add tomatoes slowly to the white sauce rather than the other way around to avoid curdling). 6. -chicken soup (homestyle campbells) My recipe is to cook gluten free noodles (the wider the better). Use alot of water, as this becomes the liquid for the soup. Add a can of garbanzos. Season well with McKay's Chicken-style seasoning or Bill's Best Seasonings. Add onion powder, garlic powder, and Bragg's Liquid Aminos. If you like, add " Soy Curls " (they give the chicken-like texture). This is a family favorite and only gets better with age. 7. -stouffer's french bread pizza (vegetable) This is another difficult one. . .how about: your favorite gluten free bread, sliced and toasted. Add a layer of pizza sauce, your favorite veggies (mushrooms, green pepper, none at all?), and a slice of vegan cheese [Rella]. Heat in microwave. Or toast with a tomato sauce/pizza sauce smothered in Melty Cheese (see our files). In our family we serve Nachos instead of Pizza (easier). Corn chips, melty cheese, and all your favorite pizza toppings. Olives, green peppers, fresh diced tomatoes, chopped green onions, whatever your tummy can tolerate. Serve with Tofutti Sour Cream. >>>I can't stomach veggies and fruit and crave all these things I can't eat. I keep down food so rarely that I really need some help, Sue, how are you handling whole grains? Can you keep brown rice, millet, and quinoa down? If you prepared those in advance and pre-packaged them they would be available for easy use. I try to keep cooked whole grains ready in the fridge for easy meals. I also freeze them in 1 cup amounts in zip-locks. How does a creamy brown rice pudding sound? Or a thick brown rice and pinto bean soup? Are you able to keep fruits down if they are blended in a smoothy? Does that sound appetizing? Can you tolerate nutritional yeast right now? It's high in B vitamins and B6 is very helpful in keeping morning sickness at bay. I also ate alot of dried papaya when pregnant, as it was supposed to help nausea (it did. ..somewhat. . .nothing really helps except for the passage of time). Also, check the archives/files for recipes for gluten free crackers. I posted some cracker recipes that our family really likes and they are high in protein and might provide the " starch " you are craving. Can you eat nuts right now? They are high in protein and will help baby grow. Please let us know how you are doing and if we can support you in any way. Hang in there! The morning sickness will pass and you'll be feeling better soon. I remember my first pregnancy. I was teaching school and had to be to work by 7:30 am. In addition to morning sickness, I had strep throat and my doctor didn't want me on antibiotics. I was doubly miserable. I taught home ec and my students would cook all these awful smelling foods and I was miserable!!!! Of course the students thought everything smelled delicious! The end result is worth the misery now. . .but I know, the misery is sometimes unbearable! Hang in there! LaDonna
Guest guest
For the pizza, just take a piece of bread, top w/ sauce and fixin's (we love peppers and mushrooms) and top w/ a few slices of vegan cheese..Broil until it looks done:-) I live on these during busy times. Happy, healthy pregnancy to you! Lisa
Guest guest
Well the clam chowder I can't help you with, but Imagine Foods makes a lovely tomato soup you could try. Chicken flavoured soup with tvp pieces or tofu slices might work as well, and Noah's Bread makes acceptable pizza dough, as does Tom's White Bread Recipe. Fish and Chips might be accomodated by purchasing something like Mo's fish style fillet but whether or not you can batter it with a GF batter and deep fry or not I don't know. My thought to you would be to get a really good vegan supplement because these craves are telling me your body is missing something it needs to support you and the baby through this time. Don't let that cause you shame, but instead do what your are doing and look for ways to help those cravings. Most times when we get cravings it's because we aren't getting enough protein. That doesn't make you weak at all - smile. Plus, since you have morning sickness, I think it is essential you find a good B complex you can tolerate which is vegan and start taking it. When I was expecting and had baaaaad morning sickness my doctor recommend 300 mg of sustained release B complex taken 100 mg three times per day. Check with your own physician about that but b6 is especially helpful in morning sickness. BL
Guest guest
Oh yes, I wasn't thinking about the cheese. Have you tried Rose's Melty Cheese. Works great for pizza and even mac and cheez. BL
Guest guest
Sue- I am so sorry your having so much sickness. If you are up to cooking, you could easly make pot pies. We have some recipes in the files I believe. Also for chicken soup, you can make that with mckays chicken style seasoning then freeze and thaw some tofu and rip it up in the soup, give the texure of meat. You could use some soy, rice. almond milk with tomato soup. We have a recipe I posted in the files for making tortillas, you can use these add beans and what not and fry up for chimichanga. I hope this helps.. I also posted a recipe for GF french bread that my family loves, you could make that and slice it and make a pizza out of it. I hope these sugestions help. Guest guest
I'm not sure how mucn you can keep down. I like to use no-chicken broth to make soup. I saute a small amount of onion and garlic in olive oil. Sometimes I add carrots and mushrooms. When those are all soft, I pour in some no-chicken broth. When the broth comes to a boil, I add mochi (rice cake, it's dried and comes packedin plastic) for " dumplings " . These are the closest thing to dumplings or egg noodles I've found and oh-so-yummy. If I'm being lazy, I add in dried " just veggies " , too. I use quorn's " tenders " , which are gluten-free sometimes, too. The other quorn products are not GF. After 15 minutes, I have a great and filling soup. I alo make miso soup with chickpea miso (Miso Master and Red River Runners have soy-free, GF miso pastes--they don't feed the soy-free miso koji with barley). I add in plenty of ginger for my nausea. (Not preggers, just nauseated all the time.) Very yummy. ygg
Guest guest
Susan, There have been some very helpful replies come through already. I had terrible morning sickness with all three of my babies. I actually weighed less the day the babies were born than the day I got pregnant - but I've always had weight issues to deal with as well. The worst thing is that I had no desire to cook. Just walking into the kitchen made me ill. I'm hoping there is someone who can help you out with that. Protein was the key for me. If I didn't eat enough protein (and that is a challenge being vegan) the vomiting was much worse. Peanut butter, tofu, beans were all helpful. I loved hummus when I was pregnant (still love the stuff but it was sometimes the only thing I could keep down). Sometimes I just ate Tahini out of the jar. I would eat all day long. small meals. Three or four rice crackers spread with peanut butter or a bean spread of some sort, a half an orange or banana. If I was craving salty things I ate them. If I was craving sweet I ate sweet. Whole nuts did not sit well on my stomach. Soybeans really didn't like me. But I could eat the tofu and the soy based yogurts. Do not beat yourself up if for your health and the health of the baby you must eat something outside of the vegan lifestyle. You can always return to it later. Be careful of the gluten though. it will just make you sicker if you have Celiac. Keep us posted.
