Circus elephant dies of exhaustion in Bengal: investigation ordered

A fourteen year old circus elephant named kailaspati, died allegedly of

exhaustion after being made to travel 350 km from purulia to north 24

parganas in west bengal, reports today's anandabazar patrika(sister concern

of the Telegraph in Kolkata). The elephant was found dead on tuesday

morning. experts and vets have suggested that the death was abnormal. an

investigation has been ordered. the assamese circus, now performing in

titagarh, claims they have the requisite papers for the elephants. after

kailaspati's death, five elephants remain in the circus, bijli, raju, gulab,

parbati and chandra.
