Guest guest
I have to agree that many older age cooks are in a rut. My sister is slightly in a rut, and I cringe at the full sugar/canned fruit Jell-O she serves, but it is with a good heart. I try to help her change and she is slimmer by far than I am! So when I say she uses old methods, apparently she isn't over eating! My neighbor would NEVER consider cooking with wine or using an arugula mix of fresh greens. A m-loaf and potatoes and heavy cheese sauce are her mode. Vegetables are overcooked. This sort of uninspired cooking, use of the iceberg lettuce, heavy on the pasta with unexciting red sauces, may stem from frugality and family recipes. In our enlightened age, of healthy cooking, we have so much more to chose from. Vegetables are available fresh, all year. Though the strawberries still seem quite tasteless until they come into season in our own areas. Shipping is not their friend, and many perishable fruits must be picked on the unripe side. Happy Note: I do believe many " oldster " cooks are becoming quite enlightened. With Internet sleuthing; new ideas for menus, and cooking tips are readily available. Many people " of an age, " no longer have large families to plan for and cooking for one or two, is easier. Interesting ingredients are now in most all grocery stores. When we shop in the Whole Foods or Sprouts grocery stores, we see a predominate number of older shoppers. I still " soothe " myself with cheese, so this is something I am trying to change. I am working on lightening up on my dishes. Here is a nice recipe that DH and I enjoyed recently: Pear Mayonnaise 1 ripe pear 1/2 T olive oil 1 T lime juice 2 T reduced fat mayo black pepper to taste Peel and chop pear. Sauté it in a small pan, with olive oil and lime juice. Cook until soft, *puree. Stir in mayo and pepper. [i used a *potato masher as I wanted a bit of substance not a creamy texture.] This was served, spooned over grilled Portabella mushrooms, stuffed with seasoned breadcrumbs, onion and crumbled bleu cheese. I wonder what the vegan bleu cheese is like, has anyone tried this? I've see a bit of weight loss in the last few days! Happy healthy eating, to you all.
