Gluten free, Soy free, Nut free, Tomato free! Help

My family is now in quite a pickle. Started off some years ago when I

learned that I was severely allergic to soy. But I adapted all my

recipes and we moved on. Then about a year and a half ago we learned

that my middle son is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts

(along with shellfish). Well, that did away with a lot of mainstays

and rescue meals (like PB & J). My husband gets a rash when he eats

tomatoes. Now we have learned that my youngest child has Celiac and

must be gluten free.

I'm really struggling to come up with nutrioua meals that will meet

everyone's needs and still get some protein into us. Frankly we are

getting sick of beans and corn. And, if possible, my hubby and I would

like to stay vegan... the kids could care less.

Question: if your son is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, is he allergic to

almonds? Almonds are actually a member of the plum family and not related to

tree nuts like walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts. If you haven't tried those or had

him tested for it, you might look at almond butter.

If not, what about pumpkin seed butter, tahini, sunflower seed butter?

We eat a lot of brown rice, wild rice, dal, and other bean dishes.

We're not vegan, though I am lacto-ovo vegetarian (organic, local,

free-range on the lacto and ovo bits). I'm allergic to soy, gluten,

and peanuts, in addition to a few other things more easily avoided.

Is your son allergic to all treenuts, or just certain families? Are

pine nuts off the list, especially raw ones that you can wash and toast

yourself?

Sunbutter and peabutter are PB options. I really like sunbutter--it's

made in a peanut-free factory. There's a risk of soy contamination,

but not much. I haven't reacted to the soy-free versions. Golden

peabutter is supposed to be really good, but some folks who have severe

peanut and soy allergies develop pea allergies easily.

Unfortunately, Almonds give him hives. We do eat tahini, sunflower seeds,

pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds, poppy seeds and flax.

Thank you for these suggestions. He is allergic to pine nuts, unfortunately

(and I get mouth sores when I eat them, so I think I'm allergic to them too.

The Sunbutter sounds like a lovely alternative.
