Guest guest
Hi Barb, I am a newbie veggie and had never even heard of seitan a few months ago. When I did I jumped on it. At the time I wasn't yet aware pre-made was even available, so I didn't think long enough to be nervous about it, I just did it. I use vital wheat gluten available at my local Safeway and have enjoyed experimenting with various seasonings and cooking techniques, such as simmering VS baking. Don't be afraid! It's easy ... really. That being said, don't be put off if your first attempt or two isn't a gourmet delight, LOL. I'm still learning and fine tuning to my tastes. I made seitan unchicken " wings " for Superbowl, which I baked in the oven, which were pretty good. Today I am making a seitan roast in my crock pot. Will let you know how it turns out. Don't be afraid, go for it. They do give a lot of encouragement. ...and yet... I am not sure I am ready to make my own seitan. There are on-line venues that sell the commercial seitan, so I may get on the ball and try some. I am hoping that I can go to local health food stores for this. After reading this page: http://vegkitchen. com/recipes/ seitan.htm<http://vegkitchen. com/recipes/ seitan.htm> This line from the site encouraged me... " Using pure gluten flour provides a clever shortcut to a great homemade version that is not difficult to make. " Is anyone doing this at home, and if so how are you getting along with it? Guest guest
Hi there Pat (Stone, that is - I'm not talking to myself quite yet) - Glad to hear others love making seitan. I was amazed the first time I made it at how easy it is. Thing is, we all like it different flavours and different textures. Also a lot depends on the use you're going to make of it, doesn't it. So the thing to do is to jump right in and to experiment like mad. I might add that when I first tried seitan I bought it from a healthfood shop. I absolutely HATED it and didn't even consider having it in a restaurant for ages. Then I found I did like it, then I decided to make it What a revelation. Btw, just got around to clicking into your blog Great idea - and very enjoyable!! I've linked you to my food blog. Guest guest
I talk to myself all the time! But, thank you Pat for your kind words. I'm afraid I've been remiss with my blog lately. A lot going on and haven't gotten around to posting, but not because being veggie has become less interesting for me! I am frankly quite shocked by how much I enjoy it. Though people tend to ask, " Are you still vegetarian? " (emphasis on still), in my mind the question of going back has become preposterous. Your links helped me enormously with seitan. Through another blog I heard about and ordered an out of print book called Simply Heavenly, which I am very excited about. Haven't gotten it yet, but it promises over 1400 vegan recipes, many of them various forms of seitan. Can't wait. Thank you for linking to my blog, I promise to update soon!
