Register strays, pets: MCH

Staff Reporter

The population of strays is put at over 1 lakh, besides 11,000 pets

in city

HYDERABAD: While its squads are scouring Ziaguda to trace the killer pack

of dogs that killed six-month old Ritikesh, the MCH wants all owners of pet dogs

and those sheltering strays to get them registered.

This can be done at veterinary hospitals and a token number obtained in

the next couple of weeks. In a step aimed at putting its regulation and

licensing job in order, the MCH Chief Veterinary Officer, P. Venkateshwar Reddy,

has warned that failure to do so would attract strict action including seizure.

" Despite making several appeals very few are coming forward to register

their pets though they do not mind spending lot of money to buy pups, " he said.

As per law, he was entitled to seize unregistered dogs and confine them for

three days.

Paltry registrations

If there are no claimants, the MCH has the right to take further action,

including giving them away for adoption or mercy killing them if found to be

carrying diseases. If the stray dog population in the city is put at 1 lakh and

above besides 11,000 pet animals, the number of dogs registered in hospitals

under its jurisdiction is a paltry 1,100!

A fee of Rs. 30 is charged for registration and in turn a free vaccine

shot worth Rs. 70 is given to the canine valid for a year. Dogs can be

registered at veterinary hospitals located at Shantinagar, Bhoiguda,

Narayanaguda, Seetarambagh, and Malakpet and at organisations like the Blue

Cross.

There was no dramatic rise in complaints of stray dog menace after the

Ziaguda incident and only 20 were received on Thursday. The CVO says there was a

complaint about pigs moving around in that area last week and the squad picked

them up.

But locals resisted when a few stray dogs were rounded up, he claims. It

would take at least a week before the killer pack is tracked and held captive as

the area borders a surrounding municipality, he adds.
