Alert motorists to animal danger - New Straits Times

11 Dec 2006

DATUK NORDIN YUSOF, Subang Jaya

--

AS an animal lover, it pains me to see wild animals getting killed on

our highways. The recent gory picture of a tapir killed by a vehicle

on the Shah Alam-Puncak Alam Highway (NST, Dec 6) hit a raw nerve.

I can't help but feel sad at the attitude of our drivers who use the

roads, especially on this particular " killer " stretch of the Shah Alam

highway that has seen five tapirs killed by careless drivers.

I would like to propose that a special committee be set up by the

appropriate authorities like the Environment Ministry, state

governments, Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan, Malaysian Nature Society,

etc, to study accident areas where wild animals such as elephants,

wild boars, bears, deer and tapirs, among others, have been killed on

our highways.

Once these areas have been identified, they should then have the

appropriate signage erected to warn motorists that they are entering

animal-crossing points.

If Australia can put on its less busy roads signs like " Kangaroo

Crossing " or New Zealand its " Sheep Crossing " , what's wrong with

Malaysia putting up similar signage?

Our drivers must be educated to think of other " road users " whose

traditional crossing points have been disrupted by human

encroachments.
