Guest guest
it's nothing more than a vegetable oil that comes from the rape seed plant. our store has name brands like Wesson but also a store brand. It's supposed to be better for your cholesterol but from what I've read it's more toxic than using olive or regular veggie oil. You can use any cooking oil in it's place, depending on what you are making. For a dinner you can use olive oil, and veggie oil for sweet things. I like to use sesame oil for stir frys and peaut oil for frying. meg christie_0131 wrote: > A number of the recipes here have canola oil as an ingredient - this > is something I'm not familiar with. Guest guest
Thanks for answering this, Meg. Yes, it is just rape seed oil. Since a lot of rapeseed plant is grown in the British Isles, i would think you'd be able to find it in Scotland. Rape seed fields are a popular place for those " aliens " to make crop circles. i have heard that canola can be bad for you if heated too hot, so it isn't the best choice for saute and frying. But other than that it is fine and a healthy choice for baking and use in salad dressings. i often use canola oil in my homemade salad dressings half and half with olive oil. i like the flavor of olive oil better, but it tends to get gloppy-thick in the refrigerator if i don't thin it out with canola. ~ pt ~ Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they do when they stick together. ~ Verna M. Guest guest
Thanks Meg and PT - I have grapeseed, sesame, groundnut and olive oils which are the ones I mostly use. Oil seed rape is everywhere in Britain and has completely transformed the British countryside. I hate it as a plant - the flowers are such an alien colour and just look wrong here. Perhaps you'd be better not storing olive oil dressings in the fridge, PT - the label on my olive oil specifically says not to refrigerate. Guest guest
Please don't use canola oil! It is genetically engineered rapeseed oil. You can go ahead and use it to oil your sewing machine or lawnmower because that's all it's good for. NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION! Go to: www.karinya.com/canola.htm There's plenty other websites on it, too. In good health........Betsy
Guest guest
This is true, Betsy. I'm glad to see your post. Any oil is fractured food but canola is one of the worst things that the food industry has forced upon humankind. It's cheap to make so it impacts the bottom line and, unfortunately, that's what it's all about.
