Dogs killed in Anekal?

Staff Reporter

Animal lovers have recorded footage; councillor denies accusation

BANGALORE: The Anekal Town Municipal Council has killed several dogs over

the past three days, according to eyewitnesses and residents of the town.

Two animal lovers, Savitha Nagbhushan and L. Srinivasan, from Bangalore

have recorded footage of street dogs being rounded up, killed and dumped at a

pit along with garbage. The footage also shows residents stating that they had

seen the dogs being rounded up, allegedly injected with " cyanide " and then

thrown onto a garbage truck. Residents have said that the drive had been on

since March 23. There are also clippings of dogs lying immobile on the road or

writhing in pain.

Ms. Nagbhushan and Mr. Srinivasan were told that the dogcatchers were

experts from Kerala. They visited the place on information from Ranganath, a

resident of Anekal. When The Hindu contacted a councillor from Anekal, Nagaraj,

he denied that the dogs were being killed. " We caught them and have left them 15

km inside a forest. We are not killing them, " Mr. Nagaraj said.

Mr. Nagaraj said that there had been two or three deaths in the town due

to dog bites. " The media has not reported on it because it is a small town, " he

said. On how long the drive has been going on, he said it started on Saturday

and that " experts " were handling it.
