Dear Conservation Friends,

The kaziranga National park in Assam is facing severe threats from poachers

since March 2007. More than 10 rhinos were poached by poachers in the park.

The last two rhino poaching took place in past 4 days. It seems the local

government is yet to take this issue seriously. May I request you to write a

letter to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, The President of the Indian National Congress

Party to take appropriate measures as Assam government is currently run by

the Indian national congress party. Earlier similar appeal was given by one

of the NGO in Assam to write to the Prime Minister of India. But it seems

that the local government is not taking the direction of the Prime Minister

too seriously. As such a letter to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi might give more result.

You may use the following draft letter in your letter head and fax it to

Mrs. Gandhi at +91-11-2301 8651 or +91-11-2301 7047.

Please help the rhinos.

Thanks for your little support towards rhinos.

SUB: Appeal to take urgent step to halt rhino poaching in Assam

Dear Madam,

We are very much shocked at the recent rise in rhino poaching in Kaziranga

National Park of Assam which is known for its successful rhino conservation.

Since March 2007, more than 10 rhinos were poached. In past 7-8 years, about

4-6 rhinos were poached in Kaziranga according to reports available. It has

been learnt that the crux of the problem lies with the Assam Government for

not being able to fill up more than 1000 vacant posts of frontline staff in

the Forest Department. The Wildlife Crime is the second largest illegal

crime in the world after narcotics, but in Assam, the priority given by the

state government to halt wildlife crime seems more than minimum.

We would like to request you kindly to use your good office and direct the

Chief Minister of Assam to fill up the vacant position with young youths to

strengthen the staff strength. Please also ask the minister concern in Assam

to take up the rhino protection and wildlife crime issues at the top of the

conservation agenda to keep the sanctity of National Parks, World Heritage

Sites and Wildlife Sanctuaries intact.

We do hope for your urgent step and personal intervention to save the rhinos

in Kaziranga National Park and other rhino sites of Assam.

If we could offer any assistance to your government to strengthen rhino

protection in Kaziranga and other protected areas of Assam, we are ready to

lend our assistance wherever possible.

Thanking you,
