That will 1) help them and 2) raise awareness for the problem and solicit funds. As for getting out the word and to get more members - are you all familiar with this website. http://www.worldanimal.net/ World Animal Net is the world's largest network of animal protection societies with consultative status at the UN. Working to improve the status and welfare of animals with over 3,000 affiliates in more than 100 countries. The world's largest database of animal protection societies, with over 16,000 listings and links to more than 10,000 Web Sites. To start a search, select a category in the sidebar or search by geography. For an extensive list of vegetarian societies, go to the International Vegetarian Union. You can literally go through the lists of groups around the world. I used the lists a few times to get support for some issues. I emailed groups and asked if they would put something in their newsletters or on their websites to get their members aware of an issue. In the US alone there are so many dog/cat rescue groups - once the site is up and ready, we could send an email (it's pretty easy, click, cut and paste) to these groups asking them to let their members know a global group is forming to help further the Chinese animal welfare movement. Some will/some won't. Some don't the appropriate communications vehicle, but if they do, great way to reach people who care about animals. To me this is far more effective than going to the media. First of all, local media really only care about local news. The media today, and I know I'm in PR, are understaffed. They can hardly cover what's gonig on in their communities. So my feeling where possible is bypass the media and go directly to the target 'customer'. Maybe we can do a little video and post on YouTube (more about what rescuers are doing than horrific, this helps to. People shut down when they can't take. That's why Best Friends in Utah (www.bestfriends.org) got so successful. They focused on the good being done, not the horrible. That got them a lot of mainstream support. Today they have over 22,000 members. So when the site is up, we could all start emaling these groups which are listed on World Animal Net. It's pretty easy since most of the listing provide email addresses. We could craft one simple email and divide up the lists. Check it out. We could reach thousands of animal lovers. I have worked tirelessly to add a voice to the quorum and finally the European Parliament voted to ban the import of cat/dog fur into the EU. This is very significant because the cat/dog abuse in China is largely due to this macabre trade. I expect (I HOPE) that with this ban, things will get easier for cats and dogs in China since the business will no longer be that profitable. Europe may not be the largest consumer of dog/cat fur, but they are certainly the most important market. ONE STEP AT A TIME! : - )) AntiFurSociety@com Friday, July 20, 2007 8:06 AM [AntiFurSociety] Chinese 'snub' EU cat and dog fur ban China has been accused of " sneering " at the EU following the recent introduction of a ban outlawing the trade in cat and dog fur. The claim was made by UK Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson who has just returned from China as part of a parliamentary delegation. MEPs went to Beijing to ask the authorities there to stamp out the trade after parliament voted unanimously in June in favour of a ban. But the delegation was told that the decision to close the EU's borders to such products was Europe's business and the Chinese could not guarantee the trade could stop. " I found the meeting extremely unhelpful and unsatisfactory, " said Stevenson. " Clearly, we have touched a raw nerve with the Chinese government on this issue and despite the successful implementation of our EU ban, there remains much work to do to convince the Chinese to put a stop to this horrific business once and for all, " he said. " Slaughter of theses animals is barbaric, with cats strangled outside their cages as other cats look on and dogs noosed with metal wires are slashed across the groin until they bleed to death as the wire noose cuts into their throat. " The ban on cat and dog fur imports, exports and trade is expected to become law in all 27 EU member states by 2009. The campaign received high-profile support from Sir Paul McCartney, Heather Mills and Rick Wakeman. http://www.eupolitix.com/EN/News/200707/c6d10fbc-9a0f-4f47-ace7- a6523fe8f52b.htm
