Guest guest
One of the parents of a severely allergic child wrote an editorial about Peanut Allergies. She said the snack list was created to give parents an idea of what was safe to send to school. Unfortunately, she also noted that MANY facilities that process *health* foods also process peanuts and cannot guarantee there is no cross contamination. Even though a food item may not contain peanuts in its ingredient label there is still a risk that peanut residue could be in the food. Smaller companies cannot risk the liability either. Children at my daughter's school are asked to brush their teeth and wash their mouth and hands before coming to school if they have had a peanut product for breakfast. We just don't buy peanuts or peanut butter anymore. The problem is when we cannot send cashew, almond, macadamia and other butters (or healthy foods made by smaller companies that use nuts) in for a snack because of the risk of cross contamination. I have a friend in his 60's who has lived with anaphylactic PN allergy all his life. I hope the families get counseling and a lot of support. We all know about coping with Vegan and Gluten Free diets, not convenient. Lisa E
