Chinese 'sneer' at EU cat and dog fur ban

Dear Friends

Like most of us, you probably greeted the news of the impending EU ban on

dog and cat fur imports with a sense of relief, thinking that finally in

2009 in Europe at least these cruel products would no longer be sold.

That may not be the case.

China regards the EU ban as a matter for Europe and clearly thinks that it

has no obligation to assist in its implementation.

This is the country that described its poisoning of over 4,000 American cats

and dogs as an isolated case and " hardly avoidable " .

It should come as no surprise that China refuses to outlaw the live skinning

of dogs and cats. Neither should any of us be shocked to learn that China

won't guarantee not to send Europe these furs. And how will they try to get

these banned furs into Europe? By purposely mislabelling them as they have

been doing for many years.

Of course, the responsibility for turning these furs away from Europe's

borders will fall upon the individual member states, and it is likely that

some will be less vigilant than others. In Europe, there is no legal

requirement for a " Country of Origin " label, a blessing to the Chinese

exporters when " Made in China " is synonymous with inferior, counerfeit and

shoddy. This makes it extremely difficult for citizens of EU countries to

boycott Chinese produce. There is one product that we should all refuse to

buy however that is very likely to be Chinese. Even if it isn't, it is still

a product of unimaginable suffering and cruelty.

Whatever animal or country you think it's from, even if it's labelled as

faux, don't buy fur.

The following report is from 'The Parliament', 19th July 2007.

Chinese 'snub' EU cat and dog fur ban

China has been accused of 'sneering' at the EU following the recent

introduction of a ban outlawing the trade in cat and dog fur.

The claim was made by UK Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson who has just

returned from China as part of a parliamentary delegation.

MEPs went to Beijing to ask the authorities there to stamp out the trade

after parliament voted unanimously in June in favour of a ban.

But the delegation was told that the decision to close the EU's borders to

such products was Europe's business and the Chinese could not guarantee the

trade could stop.

'I found the meeting extremely unhelpful and unsatisfactory,' said

Stevenson.

'Clearly, we have touched a raw nerve with the Chinese government on this

issue and despite the successful implementation of our EU ban, there remains

much work to do to convince the Chinese to put a stop to this horrific

business once and for all,' he said.

'Slaughter of theses animals is barbaric, with cats strangled outside their

cages as other cats look on and dogs noosed with metal wires are slashed

across the groin until they bleed to death as the wire noose cuts into their

throat.'

The ban on cat and dog fur imports, exports and trade is expected to become

law in all 27 EU member states by 2008.

The campaign received high-profile support from Sir Paul McCartney, Heather

Mills and Rick Wakeman.
