Guest guest
Beijing people eager to adopt stray dogs Winny Wang Shanghai Daily 2006-12-12 MORE than 200 Beijing residents have registered to adopt stray dogs housed by local police, including those caught by the police during a campaign to regulate dog ownership, Xinhua News Agency reported today. " Two hundred people called us about fostering strays, and 40 dogs have been adopted so far, " said Huang Zhimin, an official of the dog management department under the Beijing Public Security Bureau. Huang said police have housed 600 unlicensed, big, abandoned or vagrant dogs, and only healthy, small dogs are allowed to be adopted. Beijing police promoted a one-stop procedure from November, which allows qualified residents to foster dogs on Tuesday and Friday. The city began a campaign from last month to ensure that Beijing people have licenses for their dogs, do not have more than one dog per household and are not illicitly operating pet businesses in China's capital. Beijing had 550,000 registered dogs this year, 90,000 more than last year, according to the city's public security bureau.
