State probes why hospitals ignored dog attack victim

Hyderabad, March 29: Locals and municipality staff

began a hunt for stray dogs on Thursday after

seven-month-old Ritesh Singh was mauled Kulsumpura,

and the government and the police began separate

inquiries on why the boy’s family was made to run from

one hospital to another for treatment.

Health secretary P.K. Agarwal said Osmania General

Hospital (OGH) superintendent Girish Narayana would

inquire into why the four government-run hospitals had

refused to treat Ritesh. Dr Narayana will submit a

report on Friday. OGH had refused to admit Ritesh the

others being Institute of Preventive Medicine,

Niloufer Hospital and Fever Hospital.

Police said that it has asked for reports. " We have

asked them why he was referred to other hospitals. We

have asked the MCH for a report, " Kulsumpura SI Mohd.

Riyazuddin said. In Kulsumpura where Ritesh was

mauled, about 15 locals of Sanjay Nagar and MCH Colony

began their own hunt for strays.

" Criminals killing innocent people are sent to jail

but animals involved in similar incidents are not

punished. I was attacked by dogs myself, " Mr

Pandu-rang of Sanjay Nagar said. Elsewhere, MCH staff

caught 90 dogs on 20-odd complaints. " We did not

receive complaints for Kulsumpura. We will catch do-gs

there with police help, " said MCH chief vet P.

Venkateshwar Reddy.

A government census says the city has 65,000 strays,

the MCH says 10,000 are added every year. The

Institute of Preventive Medicine reported 43,318 dog

bites from April last year. Animal lovers are worried

that Wednesday’s incident would trigger a cull of

dogs. " Why did the doctors not respond immediately, "

as-ked Vasanti Vadi, secretary of People For Animals.

" This one incident cannot be the reason to kill stray

dogs, " she said. " There are several incidents of

lorries and buses killing children. Can we keep them

off the roads? The government cannot ban them as the

drivers and owners and even the users have voting

rights, which the dogs don’t. " " Ferocious dogs should

be definitely put down. But not all dogs should be

killed, " she said.
