Guest guest
Web link was not available of a photograph of the dead elephants that was published in 'The Telegraph' dated: 16/07/2007 on page 6 in the 'Region' column. The caption below the photograph read: " Two elephants were electrocuted at Gopal Krishna tea estate at Nellie in Morigaon district at around 3.30am on saturday. Police said the elephants were electrocuted as the tea garden`s fence was electrified to prevent elephants from straying inside the estate. The tusks of both elephants were missing " It may be noted that this is not a stray case of electrocution of elephants by erecting high voltage fences. In the past at least thirty elephants have died in Assam alone following deliberate attempts to electrify fences at night. Hundreds of encroachers on the northern belt of the Brahmaputra who have chopped of protected jungles and forests have even erected high voltage fences on 'elephant corridors'. I was witness to one such fence in the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary ironically a few meters away from a forest beat office. On reporting the matter to the officials there, they expressed their helplessness to either evict the encroachers from forest land or remove the fence. Extreme neglect by authorities and zero penalty for such heinous offenses of Wildlife Crime on a Schedule one species in India will certainly get stronger and stronger in the days to come.
