Guest guest
Please give me more info on oats grown outside the US. We live overseas (middle east), and oats here vary on where they are from. I think I have seen scottish and aussie oats. Which are contaminated and which aren't and where can i verify this? We have a gfcf family of 8 that likes hot breakfasts yet we don't have access to other than rice or cornmeal/corn flour. I did get lentil flour ground once. My kids are tired of rice cereal and we would love a binding agent other than corn flour! I am understandably leary as we hve been gfcf for years, so I really need verification, please send some links!!! Sue
Guest guest
To eat or not to eat... that is the question! From the reading I have done, it seems that most oat sources are contaminated and that's just a fact. The disagreement is over the extent. If you have 1 head of wheat in 100 lbs of oats, then it's contaminated. It's sort of like being a Little Bit Pregnant. If you look at the websites for McCann's, which are grown outside the US, and Quaker Oats which are grown in the US and Canada, they state *specifically* that they cannot guarantee their oat products are gluten free because of the high probability of cross contamination. So back to the major point the oat eaters/non eaters make - how contaminated IS contaminated and is that even up for discussion? Is 1 head of wheat in 100 lbs of oats considered 'low gluten' or " no gluten'? Is it enough to damage your health or not? As we all know, we can be adversely affected and yet have no symptoms at all. Most of us have been through enough agony already. Low Gluten is still gluten. Is the contamination in oats usually considered undectable except by visual inspection? Is it just taken for granted that it happens at a level that is going to make us sick? Ewww. To me, eating oats or not is a personal decision. I respect the opinions of others who disagree but I do wish they would do so less... forcefully? ;-) I like the discussion and hope we can keep it that way, I have seen Oat Wars in other places! Bit silly of them, really. ps sue you can buy some GREAT grinders and make your own lentil flours etc. if you need some sites to look at let me know. ummuhammad Jul 21, 2004 5:06 AM oats other than US Please give me more info on oats grown outside the US.
