Homocysteine advice needed please

I apologize for not being around much. I poke my head in to the website and

read the posts several times/month, but I simply haven’t had time to post

anything myself in a very long time. Still...knowing what wonderful,

knowledgable people hang out here, it’s the first place I thought of when I

needed some advice. I hope someone out there has some tips/tricks for me!

I had my annual physical a couple of weeks ago and just got the results back

from all the bloodwork. Apparently my homocysteine levels are elevated.

Elevated blood homocysteine is linked to cardiovascular disease/strokes/etc,

so I need to get it down. My family has a history of heart attacks/strokes

on both sides, so this is a significant issue for me and one of the reasons

that I stopped eating meat.

Here’s what I know: Folate (folic acid), B6 and B12 help reduce the amount

of homocysteine in the blood. B12 is not available from any plant sources,

only animals. I need to increase the amount of these things in my body and

I’d rather do it through diet than supplementation. I’m a lacto-ovo

vegetarian, but I don’t eat a lot of eggs/cheese/dairy products. Also, my

triglycerides are on the high end of normal (but my cholesterol is excellent

at 147 total), so I’d rather not add anything high-fat to my diet.

So, my feral vegetarian friends...do you have any ideas for me? Any advice?

What can I do to up my folate, B6 and B12 intake without taking a bunch of

extra vitamins? I appreciate your help!

Dear Sherri

You should take vitamin supplements orally at once. It will be most difficult

for you to reverse your deficiency by diet alone. The normal reserve for B12 in

humans is about 3 to 5 years and this indicates how much your absorption has

slipped.

Unfortunately, a folic acid deficiency can mask some results of tests for B12

and so things may be coupled. It is difficult to separate the two.

I suggest that you take clinical advice (or from your pharmacy) for supplements

and expect results over three months. The absorption rate is very low, (slow to

see results).

In that time you might make enquiries here about diet.

Best wishes

Chris

I am rich today with autumn's gold,

All that my covetous hands can hold;

Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,

A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,

Huge golden pumpkins in the field

With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,

Golden apples heavy on the trees

Rivaling those of Hesperides,

Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread

Over all like butter on warm bread;

And the harvest moon will this night unfold

The streams running full of molten gold.

Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss

With autumn glory such as this!

Thanks for all your advice :) The doc and the nurse practitioner agree with

Chris...so, more damned pills to swallow for awhile at least. At the same

time, I’m going to do what research I can to increase my intake of these

things in my diet as well. I certainly appreciate the knowledge shared!

Dear Sherri

I am pleased that you sought further confirmation and I am happy that you are

doing the right thing even though I can appreciate that it is not quite what you

want at present.

I wish you all the best.

Best wishes
