Guest guest
Mary, I would love to hear about your experience with the CSA farm. How long have you belonged, what kind of food do you get, is it a good variety, do you feel it's a good $ value compared to buying in a store? The nearest one to us is about a 2 hour drive and hubby says " NO! " because of how much we'd spend in gas to pick up the food. Shelly , " Mary R. Guest guest
I'm sorry I didn't answer this earlier. I have had a horrible few days, as my beloved Siamese mix kitty, Sammy Blue Eyes, was attacked by my coonhound on Saturday. After several hours at the emergency vet, I had to let my Sammy go. I am only today coming out of the shock and horrible guilt that has overwhelmed me since his passing. The CSA I to is one of the older ones in the Milwaukee area. It is a family farm, located about an hour north of Milwaukee. They deliver boxes to us each week from June through early October, and then every two weeks until early December. They grow their food organically, though it's not certified as such. While it is a costly thing to $330.00 for a half share, $450+/- for a full shared, you do get tons of food. My problem is that I live alone, so I can't eat a half share's worth. Some goes to my mom, some to friends at work, some to my critters, and some to the worms in my compost heap. But I feel very good about eating food grown in this area, helping a family farm to stay in business, and always having fresh produce in my fridge. The farm I to offers a very large selection of vegetables. They also offer apples grown locally that are from another farm. You can pay extra to have eggs and bread. In the past, they always sent out a newsletter. Now they do it electronically. They include information about the farm, the foods you will receive that week, reminders about deliveries, an the occasional bit of news about things happening in the organic farming world. Also, when you , you don't have to pay all the money up front. You can send them three checks. They hold the 2nd and 3rd checks until July 1 and Sept. 1 (or something like that). This helps a lot in budgeting the expense. I don't know if other CSA's do that or not. I for about 8 years. Once or twice a year they have work days. One year I went to squash picking day. It was great! Tons of people showed up and everyone brought a dish for the potluck lunch, which was held outside. It reminded me of scenes from movies where you see everyone coming together to build a barn and then having a big dinner afterwards. When one of the family's daughters lost fingers in an accident, friends emailed the list of rs. When the family had a new baby, we all shared in the happiness. I really like the feeling of community that comes from knowing who is growing my food. I just wish I was better at saving some of it, via freezing, drying, canning, etc. mrf Shelly wrote: > Mary, > I would love to hear about your experience with the CSA farm.
