Guest guest
Well, no success in getting in direct contact with PETA. I have left messages though about a call back. I have had trouble too accessing some of the PETA stuff to do with this issue. I am incredibly appalled, and it is beginning to look as if it might be from PETA, but not willing to accept that at the moment. I did find this: http://www.peta.org/about/hottopic004.asp Hot Topics: PETA's Latest Anti-Fishing Ad Campaign " Our " Your Daddy Kills Animals " Campaign intends to help fathers understand the message that they are sending to their children by fishing. Many of us here at PETA are parents ourselves and agree that we should be concerned about what our kids are exposed to. Because our leaflet exposes the violence involved in fishing, we are not distributing this leaflet to children younger than 13. Instead, we are giving the leaflets directly to their fathers who fish. We believe that this can help fathers realize that they are setting a destructive and callous example for children, who are inherently compassionate and fond of animals and who, sooner or later, will begin to understand that their dads callously contribute to the suffering and deaths of bright and sensitive beings. " I don't have the cell phone now and it has the free long distance on it and my home phone has no long distance on it so it may be next Monday or so before I can get through to PETA. According to the above the leaflet is not to be distributed to anyone under 13. My fear is that it will get into the hands of younger children who might worry that if daddy might kill their pets as stated he might kill them too. I haven't found anything on the mommy one, but still working on it. Just didn't want you to think I was avoiding the issue, just can't get through to PETA. Everyone I have shown it to can't believe that it is the work of PETA though. linda

I haven't found anything on the mommy > one, but still working on it. No pun intended but that sounds kinda fishy. As you stated, the website did state... Children will read: " Imagine that a man dangles a piece of candy in front of you. ... As you grab the candy, a huge metal hook stabs through your hand and you're ripped off the ground. You fight to get away, but it doesn't do any good... That would be an awful trick to play on someone, wouldn't it? " It then goes on to read that your " Dad " did this and what if your " Dad " did that. If you read the .pdf link I sent, the text is directed at children. In my opinion, it didn't really sound like it was directed at teenagers. The text seemed a bit more simplified for the younger children. Who knows, though - perhaps the campaign got more negative feedback then they anticipated and they are backtracking, or perhaps they are telling the truth. I don't have any definitive evidence, either way. Just didn't want you to think I was avoiding > the issue, just can't get through to PETA. LOL - you can do as you wish. Noone wins or loses. It was just an example that I brought up. If it weren't for PETA pretty much little message would be getting out to people, through these such type of organizations. My concern was just on what kind of results were their target individuals actually getting. Everyone I have shown it to > can't believe that it is the work of PETA though. Judging by the website (I've visited in the past but not recently), they seem like the usual nice website with a great amount of resources for everyone especially those interested in starting a veg*n diet (they probably still have the starter packs). I wasn't even judging by their central website though - it was of the " stunts " that you see from time to time in the real world. It just seems as though it has come off as a mockery to the target audience and through the press. The press reports it, however it always seems to be with that " what this time " attitude. Guest guest
I did just get word from a friend who has an large national animal welfare organization and she tells me it is indeed true. And she disagrees with the leaflets too. So, I have cancelled my membership in protest and let them know I will rejoin when they pull these awful leaflets aimed at children. That of course does not mean that I am against PETA, just in this instance. They have done much good work, brought attention to terrible conditions and saved a lot of animal lives. I will be interested to see what the outcome of all of this is. I am totally surprised and appalled. You were right Shawn. I am so glad that you brought it to our attention. If everyone would look at the leaflets and e-mail PETA protesting if you disagree with the leaflet I bet we could get some action on it. e-mail, Infor linda " Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it.
