(Recipe) Chex Mix in Crock Pot

I made this on Thursday. It was a bit of an experiment for me. Although

I've seen these recipes floating about the WWW, I'd still had some doubts

going into it.

Welp, it turned out great. Although I really enjoy this snack, I hadn't

made it in quite sometime. Let me tell you the aroma seasonized my place

with a merry aroma.

I did change up some ingredients. Instead of mixed nuts, I put in some

peanuts and smoked almonds. Instead of 9 cups of the various " chexy " mix, I

added 6 cups of the Uni-Chexy (the type that is suppose to encompass all of

the chexy types) and a handful of cheesy crackers.

I increased the amount of butter, Worcestershire sauce (make sure the brand

doesn't have @nchovies) and seasonings. In addition to the seasonings

below, I added some cayenne pepper for some heat and some parmesan cheese

(because I saw that another recipe used it and I thought it sounded good).

I added little by little the mixed butter and Worcestershire in the crockpot

while stirring the snack mixture and then did the same with the dry

seasoning mix that I created (you could probably put it all in a container

or bag and then transfer to crockpot, however in my mind you would lose all

of that seasoning goodness that would stick to the sides of the container or

bag).

The recipe doesn't indicate, however by checking out other recipes the temp.

setting should be on low. During the process the cereal will get moist and

chewy (but not " squeaky " ;) and that is why you take the cover off during

the latter stage of the cook (a quick note - be sure to stir throughout the

cook and make sure you get to the bottom - it will burn on the bottom if you

don't). This will dry it out. Then place it in an open container and let

it dry, stirring occasionally.

Really good and addictive stuff.

S. :)

Thanks be to the Great and Wonderful that it is not " squeaky. " Can't take

any more squeaky. I can tell everyone else but me knew what was meant by the

scientific term " squeaky. " <grinning>

Sounds good! But the downside is you have to smell this wonderful mixture

cooking all day but you can't have any!

Hi Sherry,

You make yours in the microwave? Can you please give me a bit more detail?

How long do you nuke it for? What types of ingredients?

I still have plenty of ingredients and had planned on making another batch.

Thank you.

Shawn :)

Hi Shawn,

You know, I really don't remember, and I don't have it written down. I

just buy a box of Corn Chex and follow the directions on the back for

microwave. I make usually a half batch, but I use vegetarian

worcestershire sauce and all corn checks -- no pretzels, nuts, etc. I love

the way the chex gets really flavored up by absorbing the sauce. The nuts

etc don't. You might try their website -- they probably have directions

somewhere on it. Hope that helps~

Glad it turned out!! Perhaps you'll have to remember it next time you

have a smoky aroma in the house! ;-)

I've always liked the corn or rice chex for this thing. I thought the box I

purchased had those two and the wheat (or bran, the brown ones) chex mixed

up. Ended up it was all of the chex types smooshed into one recipe and chex

product. So the texture ended up like the crunchier wheat variety. Would

have rather have had the corn but it was great either way.

Interesting. It all really ends up tasting the same, however I do like the

different colors, textures and sizes created by adding pretzels, crackers,

cheerios and so forth.

Yup yup - no doubt!

The nuts

Thanks Sherry. Will check it out. I checked the box but no such luck on

that.

Oh I've also tried a recipe called Texas Trash. That includes pumpkin seeds

and a few dashes of hot sauce (along with the usual bits). Good stuff.

LOL, no doubt. Anything but that smell. I really don't like any type of

food smell about my place but I make exception for these seasonal times. :)

Happy belated thanksgiving to you - or for some of us happy leftovers day.

Amy, how was your restaurant experience??

I only like food smell when food is actually cooking, nothing that

lingers long!

Just posted the menu a bit ago - it was awesome!!! Everything was

delicious, but I was glad to have DH there to finish for me - I just

don't eat that much at once, and it would have been horrible for it to

go to waste! *lol*

Sweet. I'll check it out. Can't wait to see what they served and if you

liked it.

I hear that, Amy. Glad you two got to go and check it out. I'll look for

the thread and read with envy. :)

Take care,

Shawn :)
