Guest guest
I'm not sure about totally vegan but here are the ingredients on the Hidden Valley Ranch Fat Free Dips Mix: salt, MSG, dried onion, maltodextrin, dried garlic, natural flavor ((ahh, that's probably where something nasty is hidden)), spice, and calcium stearate. We've been using this with vegan mayo, rice milk or tofutti sour cream to make dressings/dips. Shelly
Guest guest
LOL! Yep, probably the natural flavoring will do it unfortunately. Problem is when I called the company about it they said it was proprietary information. ???? A lot of places will say that some of the questionable ingredients in something will depend on who the supplier was for that run...they just buy whatever is cheapest that round or what is available. Proctor and Gamble were really open about not being able to say for sure since they didn't know then either. I found that refreshing...at least they knew what I was asking. If I could just find out what the spices were maybe I could mimic it closely enough to satisfy me. Which vegan mayo do you use? Do you like it and is it tangy? I have never used the rice milk since it is so high in carbs, but wondering if in some things it wouldn't work better than the soy? linda " Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it. Guest guest
i have some food allergies and more than once I've had to call companies and just run down a list of spices and ask them to say " possibly " or something similar when I asked what incredients were in the " spices " . They wouldn't give me the info stright out since it's considered proprietary, but when I explained I had a food allergy that could send me to the ER or a grave they were somewhat more understanding and would say yes or no to a list I read them, they just wouldn't volunteer the info right out. Guest guest
I just did a websearch to see if I could find anyone who'd been able to get the info about what's in the " natural flavor " and alot of sites list the HV fat free dip mix as vegan, including PETA. I would think PETA would check that before endorsing it as a vegan product, but maybe I'm wrong. I make my own vegan mayo and, yes, it's pretty tangy. We always have 3 kinds of milk in the house. Vanilla Silk, enriched Rice Dream, and Blue Diamond choc. almond. I mainly use the Rice Dream for cooking savory foods because it has no added sweetener. It's impossible for me to find unsweetened soy milk around here. The other two are for drinking, cereal, and sweet cooking (pancakes, cookies, etc.) The Blue Diamond choc almond is amazing! We drank this before going veg because it was a slightly healthier version than cow milk with Hershey's syrup. No one can tell it's not cow milk! No aftertaste, creamy, good. Lots of carbs though Shelly , " linda " <lindai81@c...> wrote: > > LOL! Yep, probably the natural flavoring will do it unfortunately. Guest guest
I have the list from PETA, I had forgotten about it...I just have to find it and look on there. I thought we had, but maybe overlooked it. Thanks for the reminder. I have talked to PETA before about the vegan stuff and if they know for sure if it is accurate. They are short staffed and try to keep up, but they say that manufacturers change their recipes regularly and we need to check and let them know if something that they have listed is now not vegan. Hershey's chocolate syrup is vegan...it has the Jewish dairy symbol so I thought that it had dairy in it even though PETA had it listed as vegan, but it just means that the chocolate was made on the same machinery that other dairy products were made. Now I don't pay a bit of attention to those symbols since they mean something different to us. I will definitely have to look for the almond chocolate milk. Thanks for the hints. Continual learning process for sure. linda " Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it.
