Guest guest
I couldn't find a recipe anywhere online for veg*n bacon bits last night so I tweaked the tofu bacon recipe and came up with this. It turned out pretty good and I thought I'd share. (used them in the Philly Potato Chowder from The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook. Yum!) 3/4 cup TVP flakes 2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes 2 tbsp soy sauce 1/4 tsp liquid smoke 1/2 tbsp pure maple syrup 1 cup boiling water Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine everything but the TVP flakes in a bowl until well mixed. Add TVP and stir to coat. Let stand 15 minutes until almost all liquid is absorbed. Spray a cookie sheet with no-stick spray and pour TVP mixture onto sheet. Spread into a thin layer and lightly spray top of mixture with the no-stick spray. Cook in oven for 20-25 min. stirring frequently (every 5 to 10 min.) Watch carefully because it goes from browned to burnt very quickly! Cooking time may vary from mine due to altitude differences. Also, if you like liquid smoke you can add as much as 1 tsp to this recipe. Shelly
Guest guest
Hi Shelly, Thank you for posting this recipe of yours. I just picked up some hickory liquid smoke last week. I have the tvp, flakes and soy sauce. I'll need to dig around to see if I have maple syrup. I'm going to experiment with this on a low heat in my electric skillet. If all goes well, I'm going to add them to a baked potato soup I'm going to make. Very cool, thanks.
