Guest guest
No, but close. The turnip isn't as hard, cooks faster and it's white when peeled. The rutabagas, takes longer to cook and it's more of s deep yellow. The taste is different also. They have pretty much the same shape. Guest guest
Donna I appreciate your help, but I buy both white and yellow turnip, do you think the yellow ones are rutabagas? I am going to have to google a picture search... My grandmother always cooked one yellow and one white turnip together.. well she cooked them seperately, then mashed them seperately and then mixed them in a bowl with some 'butter' and a bit of sugar for holiday meals.. I loved it! Then when I met my husband they cooked white turnips and mixed them with cooked and mashed carrots.. that is a great dish to. yummy yummy! My tummy is growling!! Guest guest
I have a feeling your Gran cooked them separately since one was a rutabagas, they take almost twice as long to cook. I boil potatoes and in a separate pan I boil a rutabagas and mash them together. I grew up knowing them as swedes, that's another name for them. When you pick the turnip up it doesn't feel as heavy as a rutabagas of the same size. I'm sure you are buying a rutabagas when you buy the yellow one. I love all the root veggies mixed together. I have a good Root Soup recipe. See if it's in PT's files there and if not I will post it for you. I know it's in my groups files.
