If you were in DC I'd tell you to go to The Vegetable Garden, which is veg organic Chinese... maybe do a google search and see if there's anything like it up there in Canada? *hugs* Amy
Guest guest
What does it mean to have a plus5 poultry allergy? Guess we will have to help you out to find all the best vegetarian alternatives for your formerly favorite foods. That shouldn't be a problem, so don't feel overwhelmed. We have a great bunch of very informed and experienced cooks. Many of us have tried a lot of the vegetarian chicken-like products out on the market, too, so assuming you can find some in your area, we can tell you which one we like. i am a fan of Chinese food and Asian cooking in general. i most often make it myself at home. Some Chinese restaurants do not use chicken broth in everything. You just have to ask around. Can you use egg whites, or are they out, too? If you are allergic to foods most places will do their best to fix items special for you without the food item that can cause you harm, so be bold and ask them accomodate you. Don't feel like an ostrich. *lol* You know being a vegetarian is a continual learning process, and we all make errors and we all learn new things often about what is in our food. You just have to be super careful due to having an allergy. For most of us label reading comes as second nature now. My best advice is to never go shopping hungry, and also to choose a good time when the stores are not busy so you can take your time reading labels for your dangerous ingredients. [i shop at night] Why just this last year i found out the Doritos guacamole flavor chips i was munching on had chicken broth! Who would have thought? *lol* Thankfully that error didn't make me sick or cause me physical harm, but i was still disgusted. Now i read and re-read those labels on my favorite junkfoods. Anyway, enough rambling on, my point is we are here to help you, so you are not alone. Ask away for any recipe or info and we will do our best to help out. ~ pt ~ The snow is soft, and how it squashes! " Galumph, galumph! Guest guest
Heather, I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis of food allergy! As a mom of 2 food allergic kids ( " anaphylactic " allergic not just intolerant), I think I can understand some of how you are feeling right now. It's very overwhelming at first and probably seems like everything has that evil substance in it. It will get more manageable in time and there is alot of great info online about food allergies. Maybe it would help to join an online support group of some sort?? I've found that what I miss the most is the convenience of just picking something up and being able to feed it to my family. I have to read labels ALL THE TIME (which is probably something most veg*ns are used to doing anyway) We basically can't eat out anymore because an accident could be fatal. I would think that there's not much that can be done at your buffet but I see no reason why you can't special order Chinese food at a regular restaurant and ask them to steam in water, use veg broth instead of chicken in soups, etc. You can totally do this! Guest guest
i developed a shellfish allergy out of nowhere a few years ago when I was 24. I ate shrimp gumbo on monday and was fine, ate leftovers tuesday night and within 20 minutes I was in shock and in an ambulance, my eyes, lips and throat swelled shut. Two years later I ate a hot sauce that I didn't know contained clam juice (yuck, just what do they juice, I dont want to know) and within 20 minutes I was swelling up and couldn't breathe. I also can't have much seaweed (small amounts are ok), most OTC calcium supplements, most liquid iron supplements, many toothpastes and ice cream, etc. You just have to read those labels! It's less of an issue now that we don't eat seafood of any kind, but the non-obvious stuff like eating out is scary. I always have two epipens and a cell phone with me. As a rule we don't eat out at Asian places because of the use of oyster oils, and when we make it at home we read every single label carefully, and then read it three more times before I eat it. We don't do fast food fish places either (again, no longer an issue) because I had a cod sandwich once (I am not allergic to regular seafood) and I immediately started reacting and had to pull over and get some emergency medicine as I had evacuated my home due to a hurricane and I wasn't in my state. Allergies happen fast and often out of nowhere. Shellfish/mollusks are pretty easy to stay away from, but sometimes they are mistakenly added to items not marked, and you have to be really careful eating out becuse you never know what was cross-contaminated. A story comes to mind, I forget the brand, but their regular frozen ravioli bags were mistakenly filled with lobster-filled ravioli, that is a pretty serious mistake. Recently we were at Chilis and they had a tiny little sticker on the menu that said if you were allergic to shellfish to not order anything fried because they use the same oil for their regular stuff as they do their lobster rolls. I didnt even see the sticker, my husband pointed it out to me. I also have to check the label of every vitamin/supplement I think about taking. I plan on buying a media alert bracelet eventually, I dont think it can hurt since even two drops of hot sauce with clam juice (ok, that still grosses me out) can kill me. Ohoh, did you see the story recently about the teenager who died after kissing her boyfriend? She was allergic to peanuts and he had eaten something with peanuts in it hours earlier, kissed her, and she died! So tragic. meg Heather O'Neil wrote: > I means I shouldn't go near anything that contains the allergen or I'm > gonna be ghastly ill within 20 minutes or less. Guest guest
Since ya'll seem like such a really nice friendly group I thought maybe you wouldn't mind if I vented a wee bit and asked for some advice. I mentioned when I joined that I was an on again off again veggie. Well, the reason for that is because my one down fall in life was poultry. If it was around I was sunk. HOWEVER, I have just been diagnosed with a plus 5 poultry allergie. So, no more of the stuff, be it fowl of any size shape or species. Okay, I can handle that. Goodness knows there are a million alternatives and I was determined to go chick free anyway. The BIG thing is, I am also a big lover of Chinese food and those amazing buffetts that are all over the place. I have a favourite one in Cornwall and another in Ottawa. So I'm talking to my bestest friend today and she mentions that Chinese is out now. So I said, well gee, I just won't eat any " fowl " . And she says, and no won ton soup and no fried rice, and none of those crispy veggie dishes in that nice light sort of sauce and no egg rolls and on and on and I say, whoa, none of that stuff has chicken in it and she says yes it does and I go HUH!!!!. So I phoned both of my favourite restaurants and the only things in the whole place that aren't cooked in chicken broth are egg rolls and both of these restaurants use pork (I didn't know that at all) and the other meat dishes or the dessert and salad bars. All those wonderful veggie dishes are steamed in chicken broth. I am totally devasted. So if any of yo are big fans of chinese food, where do you go to get it or do you make your own. I was going down a list of stuff that contains some form of poultry and I am amazed at appalled at all the stuff I eat that I sure as blazes won't be eating any more. I was also no aware of the long list of stuff that uses animal by products. I feel like an ostrich that just got her head out of the sand. Also, along with the above mentioned allergy I can no longer eat egg yolks. Sooooo what do you put in loaves, neatballs and patties to bind them and what egg substitutes are there out there that taste good. I'm feeling terribly overwhelmed at the moment and I know I shouldn't be but I am. HELP!!!!! Heather O. I have a plus 8 to sea food which translates to = if you are going to eat this shrimp do it in the ER. <grin> I just went through my cupboard looking for soup for supper. Hmmmmm I'm going to have to read more lables before I buy I can see that for sure. I have found the So Soya site. They are in Markham, Ontario. I love their stuff and they will deliver free any order over $55.00. I can see a shopping spree right after Christmas. Thanks for all the great help. I am, at this moment, perusing the groups files. WoW, lots of really good stuff in there. Heather O - ~ PT ~ Wednesday, December 14, 2005 7:07 PM Re: New allergies at my age What does it mean to have a plus5 poultry allergy?
