Guest guest
Well Heather, bless your heart and you are more than welcome. i only wish we could do more to help, so please don't hesitate to ask us questions. i have a family history of shellfish allergies. My mom just up and developed a full-blown allergy to every sort of shellfish; her's started out with a mild reaction to scallops, too. i don't know if i am allergic per say, but lets just say i am not about to try eating them... not vegetarian anyway, so why risk it. The good news is you are proactive and are heading in the right direction towards good eating. Your recent weightloss is so positive, too. Things are looking brighter. ~ pt ~ Blow, blow, thou winter wind Thou art not so unkind, As man's ingratitude. ~ William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) ~~~*~~~*~~~> , " Heather O'Neil " <diamyst@s...> wrote: > So, for those of you who have read this far, thank you for reading this far, and thank you for all the great emails and hints and helps. Guest guest
First the explanations Thank you for your replies. I have the " anaphylactic " to scallops and have all my life as have all female members in my family on my mothers side. Now isn't that weird and so genetic. Both my girls probably as well. They have never had the urge to try. Then at 50 (is that a magic number or something where your whole life turns upside down) I developed total intolerance to all seafood and freshwater fish. Then salt water fish, then I became allergice to cats (we have 9 by the way) and dust and dust mites. Then that same year I stopped being able to digest pork or beef - do you think my body was trying to tell me something? - then I developed a few skin reaction allergies - one of which was to the sun, not that I was too thrilled on the sun before anyway. Just before I hit 51 my internal thermostat quit working properly, I was diagnosed with diabetes and, because of the diabetic medication - gained 30 lbs. (weight gain was only a side effect of this medication for about 1 in 100,000 patients) The good stuff: Then, finally, I had my 51st birthday. I have been fine since. I'm 54 now and turn 55 in January. Thank goodness, and this year my pancreas (sp?) went back to normal working functions and I don't need any medication of any kind for anything other than a very mild diuretic. It has been a great year. Until this allergy thing.... BUT..... I have gleaned some wonderful recipes from the files. And I am going shopping for ingredients on Saturday to stock the pantry up so I can cook anything at any time - I like to be prepared. And I'm going to do some serious OAMC so there is no excuse not to have a great meal all planned. And, as a bonus.... I have dropped 5 whole pounds since the chicken thing happened. So, for those of you who have read this far, thank you for reading this far, and thank you for all the great emails and hints and helps. They have all be very greatly appreciated. Heather O - Shelly Wednesday, December 14, 2005 9:01 PM Re: New allergies at my age Heather, I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis of food allergy! As a mom of 2 food allergic kids ( " anaphylactic " allergic not just intolerant), I think I can understand some of how you are feeling right now. It's very overwhelming at first and probably seems like everything has that evil substance in it. It will get more manageable in time and there is alot of great info online about food allergies. Maybe it would help to join an online support group of some sort?? I've found that what I miss the most is the convenience of just picking something up and being able to feed it to my family. I have to read labels ALL THE TIME (which is probably something most veg*ns are used to doing anyway) We basically can't eat out anymore because an accident could be fatal. I would think that there's not much that can be done at your buffet but I see no reason why you can't special order Chinese food at a regular restaurant and ask them to steam in water, use veg broth instead of chicken in soups, etc. You can totally do this!
