nutritional yeast (bulk vs canister)

I have tended to buy my nutritional yeast in the canisters.

I like the flavor and powderized texture of Lewis Labs brand.

However, as you say, it costs considerably more. The things

that have kept me away from the bulk bin for nutritional yeast

is they come as flakes and there's no nutritional information.

This latter point is important, as my understanding is the B12

and amino acid profile can vary considerably depending on the

growth medium.

transferred to a jar here. Including children and animals. LOL They

had some in a canister over in the health section to the tune of one

arm and six legs. LOL I am not into throwing money out the window

though.

if you talk to the people that stock it, they can show

you the nutritional info from the bigger bags/boxes

whatever of the product.

That is a great idea, Mel. Have you ever compared

the bulk bin nutri-yeast info with that on the canister

brands?

I asked at my store before buying the nutritional yeast from the bin what brand

it was. And they told me Red Star which is the brand most named in the vegan

books that are suggesting using it. It is also the brand sold at our health

store, So, that felt fairly safe. My store has the flakes and the powder. I was

told to just whirl the flakes in the blender for the powder if you need it that

way. The only thing that surprised me and maybe concerns me a bit is that I

thought the stuff should be refrigerated and of course coming from the bins it

isn't....anyone know?

They sell the redstar nutritional yeast in the bulk

bins at Central Market in Austin. They actually put

the nutritional info on the bins, however at home they

do not and I asked so he brought it out. That kind did

NOT have B12 in it. I am glad I checked.

The Redstar stuff is available in jars too but at a

much higher price.

I never heard of nutritional yeast needing to be refrigerated... I

hope not, cause mine's always been out on a shelf!
