Guest guest
Just a quick intro here : ). My name is Anne and I am new (sort of). I was here awhile back but took some time off but am back once again : ). I have 2 kids who are veggie--ages 7 and 9. My hubby is currently overseas and will eat anything but prefers to stay omni. In my spare time I read, crochet, and collect recipes/cookbooks by the piles : ). survey says: I normally cook for just the kids and myself right now but we do tend to have friends over quite a bit and will cook for upwards of 10 people--lots of fun though : ). none of our friends are veg but will eat it if they come here : ). right now we cook all 3 meals. once school starts kids will pack cold lunch on days that aren't veg-friendly. so even then it will be 3 meals but there won't be any " I don't like it " because I can't hear them when at school : ). we do sit down together MOST of the time. Friday nights we spread out in living room for homemade pizza/snacks/movies, usually with friends. sometimes breakfast is on the run. but generally speaking we have learned to try and slow down for mealtime most of the time. mealtime is structured out to theme night every week to make meal time planning easier for me. we always have an Italian, Mexican, soup/sandwich, fancy breakfast, all-American night each week. other days are leftovers or try some new cuisine that is totally foreign to our little town : ). Sundays are usually crockpot-something to be ready after church or light lunch of sandwiches and a bigger supper. average groceries here in Iowa for us are about $60/week on average. we buy in bulk from coop about 80 miles away monthly/bimonthly and fill in from small healthfood store/Sam's Club/SuperTarget for rest. I also cook a lot for scratch as a SAHM. our daughter has lots of allergies/skin issues so we have to know what is in her food as much as possible. our highest expense by far isn't even anything WE eat--it is our dog's food : ). his specialty veg dogfood is worth a week of groceries for us. he is allergic to all meat proteins/fillers and this really works well for him. one bag lasts about a month if we fill him in with cooked veggies/fresh fruits/cooked grains. right now his favorite chew treat is a whole carrot but will positively drool for a banana, apple slices, or green beans. I usually plan menus on Friday nights when we curl up with movies. it is very relaxing to sit with a stack of cookbooks and make a menu for the week. kids will also help at times : ). Sunday afternoons are usually dedicated to chopping veggies/prep work for upcoming week's meals. it just saves time for me and then we are less tempted to do take-out : ). that's us in a nutshell : ).
