Guest guest
- Beth Saturday, September 23, 2006 7:36 PM New with a a few questions.... Hello, new to the group here and looking forward to lurking and learning from all of you! So glad to meet you! Decided to give up meat only recently (For various reasons) and am what I would consider Ovo-Lacto although since I don't eat eggs much (and have no problem using egg substitutes) I honestly think I could go Lacto with no problem but my question is this: Even if I cut out eggs completely, it seems there are SO many items that contain eggs in the recipe, would you not be getting eggs in restaurants without knowing? Could that really be considered " not " an egg eater? at home you can always use subs, dining out is sometimes hard for a vegetarian, you nee dto ask, and know you can trust your source. The other question is shrimp. I still eat shrimp..(As my last effort in giving up meat completely) and am under the impression that shell fish are still considered " meat " ? yepperz Finally, getting a lot of flack from various friends.not in the " vegetarian " part as much as being a runner (I run 20 to 30 miles per week) I have had people tell me there is NO WAY I will be able to get the amount of protein needed for a runner. The protien thing is the most misunderstood facet of vegetarianism by meat eaters. You most certainly can get your protien. If you eat veggies or drink soy or regular milk, there ya go, most meat eaters overdose on protien like mad. Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to hearing from you with any advice/or help. With Kindess, Boo good to meet you Boo, hugs, Chanda
Guest guest
Hi! Glad you are making the transition to veg. I am a recreational runner and a lacto, sometimes ovo vegetarian. You will be able to get enough protein, no worries. You need to be aware of it though. If I sort of go on an " unhealthy " kick where I eat lots of processed carbs and am not watching protein, I can tell that I feel tired and usually get a cold. Barilla pasta has a higher protein content. Include moderate amounts of nuts, beans, soy foods, and seeds for protein...you 'll be fine. As for the egg thing, I try to not be too picky if I 'm out, but you'll start to get a feel for what can have eggs hidden in them (pancakes, muffins, etc.) I would say listen to how you feel physically. If you are feeling run down or not healing quickly, maybe you'd need to keep more dairy products until you find the right balance of protein for you? I know I recently read an article about protein needs, I'll post the info when I find it. good luck! , " Beth " <boomothergoose wrote: > > Hello, new to the group here and looking forward to lurking and > learning from all of you! > > Decided to give up meat only recently (For various reasons) and am > what I would consider Ovo-Lacto although since I don't eat eggs much > (and have no problem using egg substitutes) I honestly think I could > go Lacto with no problem but my question is this: Even if I cut out > eggs completely, it seems there are SO many items that contain eggs > in the recipe, would you not be getting eggs in restaurants without > knowing?
