Guest guest
Wow, what prices! I am paying less than $4.00 per basket for organic strawberries @ my local Coop here in Eureka CA--300 miles north of San Francisco. They are probably less at the many farmer's markets held here, but I don't have time to shop at farmer's markets. I have not purchased grapes recently, but I am sure they are not that high. HOwever whatever the price, organic strawberries & grapes always taste a lot better. Kathleen Eureka CA Melissa <mapalicka wrote: Hi, wanted to " weigh in " on organic in Tn. We are about an hour from Nashville and I am basically getting most organic stuff from Kroger here also. I am not completely sure on prices off the top of my head except that org. strawberries are more than that here! When I buy them...around $5.00. have been buying the organic grapes for something different and they are 5.99 a pound.. Guest guest
One problem we have with the organic strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries we get at Kroger (perhaps it's the same at other stores, I don't know) is that we have to check each container carefully because the berries usually have a bit of mold on them somewhere in the middle. The produce section at our store is clean and well-cared and nothing else appears to be in bad shape, so I don't know if it's because people don't buy them and they sit too long, or if it's just the amount of moisture in the containers, or if the lag time between picking and shipping is more than it should be. We use to shop for produce at Wild Oats when we went to Nashville. Expensive oftentimes, and produce will only keep so long of course, especially after it makes the 2 1/2 hour drive home in a cooler bag. When I walked into Kroger across the state line for the first time it was just wonderful to see all that organic produce. Not having sales tax on food was a big ol' bonus as well. We have a local farmers' market that isn't necessarily organic and a very nice organic farmers' market 45 minutes away (in Franklin-since you are familiar w/the area) Recent Activity a.. 64New Members b.. 3New Photos c.. 83New Files Visit Your Group
Guest guest
Berries are hard to get to market in good shape. They can't be picked until they're ripe and once picked, start to degrade right away becaues they are so delicate, no protective skins & high sugar content, so it's probably transport problems. It drives my boss nuts; she works really hard to get all good berries to put in the bins we deliver.
