Guest guest
We will be driving down I5 from BC to So. Cal next month to visit family. The last couple of times that we we had to cross the Canadian/US border we started having progressively bad luck with the food that we had brought along to eat on the drive. Both my husband and I do not do well with fast food so I have always found it easier to make up sandwiches at home and keep them in a cooler for the trip down. I went to the customs site to see what was banned at the border and it gave " ideas " of what not to bring but basically said that it could change on a daily basis so we just don't want to take the chance of having to throw it all out. ANYWAYS, we have decided that we would stop at a grocery store after we crossed the border. I just hate the inconvenience of making sandwiches in the car :0( but that's life. My question is: can anyone give me the brand name of a good, whole grain vegan bread that I can pick up at most grocery stores in Washington state. I'll be in a hurry and I don't want to spend too much extra time reading labels. THANKS! Stef

That sounds pretty flaky to me It is this way on just the US side or with Canada to?
Guest guest
When I go across the border from the U.S. to Canada (B.C.) I always stop at the stores in Blaine to check with them about what is being allowed into Canada and they seemed to be really informed about it. However, the U.S. side (which is where I would be returning to) I found the U.S. officials to be arbitrary. As far as the bread I haven't got a clue. I buy from the local bakeries here in Eugene. But when you go across, supposing you are going across the Blaine entrance, try going into there which is right off the road and there is a grocery store called Haggen's there and it has a wide variety of foods. Ask them for help and maybe that will shorten your search. There is another Haggen's at the other end of town right off of I-5 with the same stuff. The other suggestion is to try using a corn tortilla shell, or a flour tortilla shell or even a flat bread, but you will still have to read the label. Usually the corn shells have nothing but corn, lime, salt in them. They have a good deli there too, but can't remember if there is much vegan. The flour tortilla shells sometimes has lard or something like that. I buy a flat bread called " Good Bread " made in Santa Ana, CA which is vegan and maybe Haggens carries it. They have fair produce too, some of it from Canada. LOL How come the US will let it in commercially, but let us try it and they have a stroke? By the way, if you are coming right on down the I-5 interstate, which I would guess you are, then a good place to buy vegan foods is right here in Eugene, OR and there is a terrific restaurant which is totally vegan called the Lotus Garden, (stifle ~PT~) and any number of grocery stores to get vegan foods. If you want information about those let me know and I will give you the directions to them...they are also on the list's site and you could do a map quest search for directions off of the interstate. If you are going to be near Escondido, which is right by San Diego, there is a store there called " Jimbo's " where there is a wonderful deli of vegan foods (the Buddhist group attached to Thich Nhat Hanh shop there). I bought all of my food there while I was there last Sept. You can do a map quest search on that too...I think Amy on our list has been there too...although she forgot the chocolate peanut butter thingies (huge, but like a Reese's peanut butter cup) which are vegan and marvelous. $2 each. I had a blast there buying stuff to eat. They have a wonderful chef for the deli. Off the subject, but I used to go across the border a couple of times a year...the Canadian officials were always so friendly and helpful...the U.S. officials real asses. linda " steffdav46 " <steffdav46 Monday, March 13, 2006 7:09 AM Vegan bread question > We will be driving down I5 from BC to So. Guest guest
I have never had a problem going into Canada with a cooler full of food and they have never asked me anything about it. We go camping in Canada often. However getting back into the U.S. the officials are asses to put it mildly. Absolutely no meat or anything like pet food that has meat in it will be allowed. Mad Cow stuff I was told...how inane. But they will go through everything and anything. Joking is not allowed. Don't look weird either. linda <zainypagan > > In a message dated 3/13/2006 9:11:08 AM Central Standard Time, > steffdav46 writes: > > . Guest guest
i would be toast these days. Not only do i look weird, but i AM weird. Tense situations bring out the devil in me, too... i can't help but chortle like Betty Rubble on crack when i get nervous. i also don't have much respect for those martinets so i'd be apt to mutter something very smart-ass like. i best stay home, eh? *lol* ~ pt ~ It is the season now to go About the country high and low. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson, 'Underwoods' ~~~*~~~*~~~> , " linda " <lindai81 wrote: getting back into the U.S. the officials are asses to put it mildly.
