Guest guest
I've been a vegetarian for 29 years and this summer, while in Pennsylvania at an Indian Restaurant, I clearly explained I wanted vegetable samosas and they brought me chicken! I ate a few bites before I realized. <grrrrrr> I created quite a stink about it. You should ask at the Japanese restaurant. Often miso soup is made with fish broth. Guest guest
Potlucks and buffets have nice looking macaroni salads that many times has tuna or chicken in it. Many non-vegetarians think it's a vegetarian dish since it doesn't contain meat and will tell you to have some, it's vegetarian. Guest guest
My oops was totally dumb!!! I declared my vegetarianism and then 5 days later, I was at work and I couldn't wait for lunch, I was famished. I seriously thought about this one and planned heading straight to KFC for boneless chicken wings. I ordered them, ate all but one and looked down and said " OMG, what am I doing!! " and threw the box away! The second time, my mom made perhaps my favorite dish, dressing (stuffing to you northerners) and she uses chicken broth...I just plain couldn't resist! I'm going to try it with veggie broth and see how it comes out... Guest guest
My sister Patti and I went to lunch at Applebee's a few weeks ago and asked for the appetizer sampler WITH NO MEAT. We asked for extra mozzerella sticks instead of chicken wings because WE DON'T EAT MEAT. Made it realllly clear, we thought, that we were Vegetarians and DIDN'T EAT MEAT. Used the word too. So what did the server bring us??? Quesadillas with HAM in them. We got the manager over there and explained that he was lucky we were not Buddist/Moslem/Jewish/Kosher AND Vegetarian or he would have to get an ambulance to take us to the hospital to get our stomachs pumped!! We just wanted to make a point, so they would take people who ASKED for NO MEAT seriously...He apologized and promised the entire staff would be educated as to what NO MEAT meant and got us fresh food. Guest guest
Miso is traditionally made with dashi which has fish in it (bonito flakes) but if you make it at home you can sub kombu powder instead (made from sea plants) with no change in taste. Guest guest
> >p.s. - On this topic, does anyone know whether the >miso soup in Japanese restaurants is made with veg >or chicken broth? It depends on the restaurant. Many use a soybean based broth, others use fish broth. Just ask. Years ago we ordered some veggie eggrolls at a bar/restaurant in New Orleans. I took one bite and spat it out announcing that there was pork in them. Everyone else thought I was just being silly and that they were veg. Scott ate a whole bunch of them. He puked all night long. Ick! A lot of restaurants are good about listing things as veg on the menu, but there's one here that's pretty bad in my opinion. They offer Vegetarian-Style Pho. The wait staff thankfully caught us before we ordered it and told us that it's Vegetarian-Style, not vegetarian. It was made with...beef broth, I believe. I felt that was kind of misleading. The food has become pretty lousy there anyway. Guest guest
I ask for ingredients list. Then I ask if my food will be cooked on the same surface as meat. If not, good. If so, can they cook it on a clean surface? If not, nevermind. I'll just eat at home. When the food comes I pick through it. I don't trust people who don't have my beliefs to prepare my food without a big deal made of it. So many people think vegetarianism is just a diet, like Atkins or South Beach. I've explained to many a waiter what I believe, and how very, very cruel it would be to not make absolutely sure a vegetarian's food has no dead bodies in it. A bit crazy, maybe. Anybody seen Rat Race, where John Cleese says something along the lines of " I can do whatever I want- I'm eccentric. " Ever since I saw that movie it's been my excuse for all my odd behaviour. Guest guest
There is a restaurant here (local, non-chain) that shows a carrot as a symbol for the vegetarian items. But when you look over the menu, only two items have the carrot beside it. lol! Too make things worse, those two items? Onion rings (ok), and fully loaded nachos (which list *ground beef* as one of the toppings included!). Oddly enough, none of the vegetable sides have the carrot symbol beside them! huh? lol! Guest guest
last time this happened to me was 5 years ago, I was buying a slice of pizza and asked for cheese... when he gave it to me it looked like it had a small piece of pepperoni on it - I double checked with the guy - he assured me there was no meat. i buit into it and tasted the meat right away - spit the food on the floor, called the guy a word which I can't say here and stormed out mike
Guest guest
When I was in college I waited tables. This woman came in and told me that she was a vegetarian. I told her I was, too, and that there were many things on the menu she could order. She then order a BLT with the B!!!!!!!!! Wacky!!! When I first became vegetarian, I forgot, too, and ate some tuna fish, but I was only 7 years old, so I'm cutting myself a break! Guest guest
This is just my opinion, and i certainly dont mean to offend anyone... but i think its important to try and realize people arent trying to get you to eat meat out of spite or to be funny. a huge number of people are truly ignorant and dont understand what being vegetarian means, or to the degree that meat products are in food. I know its frustrating when you're out and dont get a vegetarian meal when you ask for one... but its not generally the servers fault... When i started dating my husband who is lactose intolerant, i was *positive* i hadnt cooked with dariy, until i realized (after he got a violent stomach ache) that there was milk in the biscuts i had prepared.. it certainly wasnt my intention to make him sick... I guess my point is just that our actions and how we respond to people makes a difference.. if you swear at them or are rude it leaves a negative impression, and trying to explain calmly does the opposite... just my two cents. Guest guest
You are 100% right Sarah. When we got ham in our food when we said " NO MEAT " at least 4-5 times we didn't throw a fit and embarrass anyone. My sister and I know we are representing a minority and our behavior will create an opinion of all Vegetarians. When we spoke to the manager we ended on a plesant note and the next time we went to that Applebees they got our order right. It has to be teach them, not beat them. Or the server you get in trouble today may really mess with the next Vegetarians food big time just for spite!!
