OK--that makes sense--even though the feral cats were born in the wild,

they originated from domesticated cats. We have a real problem in

certain areas around here with feral hogs. They go many hog generations

back, but originally were domesticated farm hogs. My brother has had them

move onto his property the last few years. He managed to set up a motion

camera and capture several photos of them, but otherwise has never seen

them---those guys are smart and elusive.....and destructive. No more

morels, which used to be a wonderful mid-March treat.

Well, I don't know exactly, but I do volunteer work for Feral Cats of

Oregon, and our working definition for a true feral cat is that it is a

cat

born out in the wild (so to speak) that has never had a human family (so

to

speak). They are rarely, and I mean rarely, capable of being tamed unless

they are brought in while still babies, very small ones. The cats that

were

domesticated and lived with humans and then for one reason or another

freed

(runaway, lost, dumped) are capable very often of being re-socialized and

adoptable. The grown feral cat is almost never adoptable as it is totally

resistant to being socialized and will react feral to situations and is

unpredictable. So that is where I get my definition of feral....
