Consumers Ask Tampa Tribune 09/27/06

With the scare about bagged spinach these days, is the frozen

spinach I got

a month ago safe?

Yes, frozen or canned spinach is safe. Both have been heated enough

to kill

the bacteria.

Can I use bagged spinach if I cook it first, like in a soup?

Boiling the spinach will kill the bacteria, yes. A quick saute won't

be

enough. But be very careful you don't get the bagged spinach or the

water

from the bag on anything else. If the bacteria go from the spinach

to the

cutting board to the tomatoes you chop for salad, then the salad is

contaminated just like the spinach was.

If you choose to use bagged spinach, wash all utensils and the

counter with

hot soapy water, rinse well, then spray with diluted bleach to

disinfect.
