Plastic packaging and Caution with spinach - refrigerated trucks.

This summer I worked in a cafeteria at a busy summer camp. When those delivery

trucks came in everyday, they were refrigerated and had frozen sections on them.

They immediately wheeled them into our walk in refrigerators and freezers. I

feel sure that most places do the same. but we did occasionally have spoiled

produce delivered, which we sent back with them and once we had some frozen

stuff, partially thawed, that were bakery items. We baked those right away,

but got a refund from the company.

We have one grocery store here that always has rubbery thin bitter celery and I

never purchase it there. I've asked that produce man why he accepts it, and he

says they don't have a choice. Well, I'm wondering why we did at camp, but a

big grocery store chain doesn't... To strange. If they had to eat the cost of

bad produce, then a delivery company would always make sure it was in great

shape.

Maybe they need to look at how it is handled in some of the grocery stores

and the delivery in the hot trucks??

They come into a main store further away and then sent to the smaller stores

that they own, by just a truck!!! This is why it happens and why they can't

return the merchandise as they do not deal directly with the suppliers!!

This could well be true. Cut your costs at the cost of customers. Doesn't

make any sense to me except to get to good produce costs gasoline as it is

30 to 45 miles away. Many of the people here don't even have a car, so they

have to buy or do without.

Chains use refrigerated trucks because they don't want to throw out

their profits. Sometimes it comes in fresh but has a shorter " shelf

life " then it normally has. We have one particular store that sells a

lot of that. You know you'll have to use the produce within a day or

two if you buy it there. But it is cheaper because of this. My sister

goes there but I won't step foot in the place.

I worked in a fruit & veggie store for years and learned about buying

cheap wholesale. They'd buy the stuff all the other buyers turned

down that was still on the broker's dock at the end of the day for a

lot less then when it came in fresh in the morning.

I'll bet that's why that one store always has crummy celery when

every other store has nice stuff.
