Guest guest
OH MY!!!!!!!! You guys are crazy:) Linda~ you are wise woman. I totally agree with what you said! So many things are getting in the way of families connecting around the table and good food! It makes me crazy~ when we are at home the atmosphere is controlable, but on occasion we eat out as a family and always atleast one tv on in the restaurant!!!!!!!!!!! I will look around and see people totally mouths gaping, stufffing their faces plugged into the tv and unplugged from their kids, wife, significant other, etc!!!!!!!!! ugh. Makes so much sense to just stay home and avoid it. Just my .02 on that..... My kids are 10 and 7. So, we haven't hit the teenage appetite years yet~ but already when kids are over I find it very hard to feed everybody good stuff without totally breaking the bank. ANd I find myself very tense when I see kids that are used to eating crap throw our more expensive food in the trash or say, " I don't like the way the bread tastes " . So, we do lots of bean burritos, fruit, etc. But I am concerned about when they are older and their friends(most have like minded parents, but a few do not) are turning their noses up at the organic black bean chips and asking for (gasp) Doritos and Cokes or something.....and I DO want my house to be the place to be....I know of health minded moms who compromised in their kids teenage years and just kept junk in the house so all the kids would hang out there, and not be at someone else's house. One mom whom I admire said she felt it was a small price to pay (LOTS of $$ for junk food, etc) to know where her teens were and more importantly, WHAT they were doing. So, what do you do? I guess I have a few years to think this thru..... And as for the husband thing....what they don't know won't hurt them....Just kidding....sort of. My husband doesn't tell me EVERY cent he spends on his beloved muscle car hobby~ must I disclose EVERY penny extra eating organically and mindfully costs us? Really, he is awesome, and I adore the very ground he walks on:) He just thinks I could shop around a little more for the right price. PT, thanks for saying I am spending wisely:) You made me laugh with your comment about patchouli being in the fibers of your hippie clothes....I can relate! Everywhere we go, either people love or hate the essential oil cloud (think Pigpen on Charlie Brown) we walk around in. We don't put a lot on, it is just in everything we use(soap, shampoo, laundry det, etc). There is such an accumulation of so many different oils I don't know what people are smelling. One day dh said one of his classmates asked him why he always smelled of fresh cut wood.....he just laughed and said " I guess you are smelling Sandalwood " . The other day in the feed store the checkout girl asked me, " what do you guys always smell like? " I said, " anything from eucalyptus to patchouli, I don't know. It is in our blood I think " She didn't' think that was very funny. She looks at me like I am a total freak now. Ooops. Have a wonderful day! Monica ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: LOL! Well, i think both times you used the word appropriately and we are all grown-ups here. i enjoyed your post and agreed with every word. Monica IS spending wisely and doing great, IMO. ~ pt ~ To know that you do not know is the best. To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease. Guest guest
FWIW, i feed 6 of us, 2 big dogs and 2 cats for around $150/wk, which includes diapers (though we do some cloth) and toiletries. We used to do $130/wk but now that the little ones are eating like big kids we've allowed ourselves to bump it up. My kids have lots of friends and apparently we are the house to be at, much to my dismay. I dont know why, maybe it's the novelty of my kids being the only ones in the neighborhood who don't go to school, so they dont have to sit next to them for 8 hours a day, I don't know. I dont often provide snacks or anything aside from water because I dont want to encourage them, but when I do the kids have been really great because they stuff is new to them. I dont give them doritos, they get corn chips which I usually make from leftover corn tortillas. They don't get potato chips, they get apples. Cheeze curls make way for real cheese slices (imagine that). I cant tell you the date I last brought soda or koolaid or anything like that into the house. The kids have never turned down water and once in a while some fresh juice, if it's citrus season. When they've stayed for dinner they gladly ate my vegetarian fare, though I do try to keep the weird things to a minimum when friends are over. Now, it could be that the kids go home and tell their parents how terrible it is, but it must not affect them because THEY KEEP COMING BACK...one parent asked me for a weekly menu because she couldn't get her daughter to eat at home but she was always over here eating. honestly, i imagine my more health-conscious kids post more of a problem when they go somewhere.
