Guest guest
i try to only go once a week, but usually i find myself going 2 or 3 times (some weeks more). every so often, i'll go to 2 or 3 stores in one day...one store for produce, one for organic and natural foods, and another if they have a really good sale on items i use and i want to stock up on. i really try not to go to the store for one item, because those are the trips that end up costing too much. lol. groceries is one of our top expenses and i was just curious what everyone else pays a week for groceries. there are three of us and i spend anywhere from $75 to $150 a week on groceries. does this seem like alot to y'all? i have tried and tried to slash our grocery bill, but it's so hard, esp. since the horrendously high energy prices have increased the price of groceries. susie --- ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > [*lol* minds out of the gutter, now] Time for > another > weekly group question, aka question of the week. > > How many times a week, on average, do you find you > go to a grocery store or market? Guest guest
On average I would have to say that I end up at the market anywhere from 4 to 6 times a week. Guest guest
I do grocery shopping online once a month and top up with fresh fruit and vegetables on a weekly basis - or at least that is the plan. In practice once I am in the supermarket I can easily be seduced into buying things I really don't need and spending more than I intended to. This has been a bit of a reality check for me. I'm glad that you asked the second question, Susie. I believe that food is probably more expensive here, but over the course of a month I probably spend the same for myself and 2 cats as you do for a family of 3. That is an outrageous amount for one person and I'm really living way beyond my means, particularly as I'm not working at the moment. I need to do some seious thinking... Guest guest
I'd say about 2-4 times a week, and I have two kitties to feed. They run around a LOT, consume energy, and decide that they get *hungry*. I can't imagine why, lol. Also, I get a lot of fresh stuff and what winds up happening these days is that I make meals for lunch for work versus buying. Figure that helps with the costs. Guest guest
>How many times a week, on average, do you find you go to a grocery store or market? Try to do it daily, but sometimes in the winter the weather gets in the way and it might only be four or five times a week. Hey, those 20 min walks to the shops all add up, ya know? Keeps this old woman fitter than she would be! We too have to shop for pets, but we have theirs sent out from a specialty shop since the furkids can't carry their own ;-) Best love, Pat
Guest guest
Probably about three times a week as I eat a whole lot of fresh vegetables and I suppose I should go every day, but the market only stocks new stuff anyway a couple of times a week so what is the point...if it ages there or here. <G> I try not to go on the weekend, especially Sunday, as they don't get fresh shipments until the beginning of the week. I spend too much anyway. Used to be more, but now I try to force myself to only shop on Saturday. Toward the end of the week, I may have to get creative, but that's fun. I spend way too much on groceries. Probably about $100/week for just me! One of the cashiers onced asked me if I managed to eat all the produce I buy before it goes bad. Guest guest
Interesting question and I think you are doing marvelously. I just buy groceries for myself, but I do cook for others at least once or twice a week which is included. I also eat only organic so that is a bit more expensive, but I spend at least $50 per week for one person. Sometimes a bit more too depending on how things are running out. Most of my spending goes towards fresh organic produce such as Kale. <g> linda " Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it. My kitties are indoor ones, even more especially since they haven't had their appointments yet to get fixed. But I plan to keep them indoors after that regardless. Guest guest
Oh, well, if include my three cats in the food budget I think I may have to eat them tonight. Oh, I guess I can't can I? I too live beyond my means in the food category. But, being organic is another issue that I feel I can contribute to so that the future generations might have a world too. That of course led to a much higher food bill. Becoming a vegan came out of being a vegetarian, becoming an organic consumer came out of being a vegan, and that all led to giving up my rubbermaids. Now there was a sacrifice! LOL One certainly has to become careful about letting too much awareness come into your life. Costly, <grinning> but challenging. It also leads to meeting terrific people like all of you here. linda christie_0131 ...over the course of a month I probably spend the same for myself and 2 cats as you do for a family of 3. Guest guest
Erin, you have just made my day to find someone that spends so much for just themselves. You have relieved my guilt over what I spend. LOL I love the place I do most of my shopping at where they have only organic produce and absolutely not one atom of meat in the whole place. They never find me strange (or let me know that they do) and they help me pick out the freshest fruit and veggies and how to fix them. I manage to eat all of the produce too. When it appears I might run out it creates a state of panic in me. Unable to get tomatoes now and the avocados I bought on sale at another store at 69 cents each for organic...bought four, were all spoiled...black inside and stringy. That was a bummer as I was exited about the salad. linda cronzen I spend way too much on groceries. Probably about $100/week for just me! Guest guest
Once a month we do our big shopping to replace pantry contents, animal feed and supplies, etc. Then, once a week I do my shopping for perishables for the following week (normally Friday-Thursday), I make my meal plans on Thursdays. Once in a while hubby has to stop on way home for milk, beer or something, but we try not to do that often. Meg

I feel like I go to the store every day but it's probably more like every other day! My fridge just doesn't hold enough food for once a week shopping for 7 people. Going more frequently usually means fresher veggies and fruit, too. My dream is to someday have one of those professional units that is a full size fridge only (sigh) Shelly

I always wonder what others spend on groceries as well. We've been spending on average about $800 a month on groceries for a family of seven but I do see it lowering slowly each month. When we first changed the way we ate it seemed like there was a bit of extra expense as we stocked our pantry with new, healthier options. I think $800 is alot but we really eat well! If I needed to, I could cut back considerably by cooking completely from scratch and making things that were more simple. If you buy organic that's quite a bit more expensive. If you buy processed or store bought vegetarian items it's ALOT more expensive. Things like that are rarely on sale in my stores and I have a really hard time finding coupons (though they are out there!) Compared to what we spent when we ate meat ($1200-1500 a month) we are doing really good! Shelly

Guest guest
For my carnivorous husband and pekingese and vegetarian self, I shop usually 2 times a week. I allow myself $120 a week but that includes whatever pharmacy items (mostly for aged peke, poor ol' fella) and an $8 lotto card :0) because I just know that the week that I don't buy it, they will pick my numbers :0/ . Like many here, I get my fair share of looks when I unload my cart of fresh produce and bulk bags of dried legumes and grains. I have recently started making my bread since it seems that all of the breads in the stores have some sort of milk in them. No biggie! I just use my ol' bread machine on the dough cycle and then remove it for the final rise and put it in a regular bread pan. Works for me! Guest guest
I know that guilt feeling, every time I walk out of the store. And it doesn't help that I feel like I'm giving the cashier a produce quiz every time. I've joked about that before, even scared one girl when I said, " I'm that secret produce test they always warn you about. " LOL. That panic when you run out of stuff, I get that too! Ever since I started eating healthier, making my own food, etc., I've become something of a hoarder. -Erin , " linda " <lindai81@c...> wrote: > > Erin, you have just made my day to find someone that spends so much for just themselves. Guest guest
Dh insists I spend too much $ on groceries. I can't seem to slash my spending either! Well, I guess if I bought the same junk I see other moms buying for their families i could! Junk is cheap. Good, fresh food isn't. I think of it as health insurance:) I must go to the store 5x a week...I know that is a lot...it always ends up being close to $200 a week for the four of us, and the occcasional grandparent and kids friends. I buy what I can at our local grocery store, then also have to make trips to my health food store(30miles)for staples and vitamins....but I only do that about once a month. So....to me the only way to get the grocery bill WAY down is to eat ramen,lunchables,koolaid,etc.......BUT YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! Who wants to do that?!!! What I saved on groceries would have to be spent on meds for hyperactivity, high blood pressure, and who knows what else:) So I just deal with having to spend more than I think I should. Buying bulk helps....but I am not organized enough (yet) to work that out....Someday....I will be one of those women I marvel at who have their family meals planned a month in advance, and everything in the freezer........one can only dream:0) Monica > > > > > - > artichoke72x > > groceries is one of our top expenses and i was just > curious what everyone else pays a week for groceries. > there are three of us and i spend anywhere from $75 to > $150 a week on groceries. does this seem like alot to > y'all? i have tried and tried to slash our grocery > bill, but it's so hard, esp. since the horrendously > high energy prices have increased the price of > groceries. > > susie > > > >
