Dear All,

Please find a message from Ms. Suparna Ganguly one of the country`s leading

animal person. I am posting this on AAPN with Ms. Ganguly`s permission as we

need more and more people from all corners to condemn this Television

Commercial (TVC). For those who have still not seen the commercial

advertisement here is the link:

Please send in your reactions to the following after viewing the TVC to the

following asking them to withdraw the ad with immediate effect, although

much of the damage has already been done:

Alpenliebe Toffee Advertisement featuring Kajol

asci

*Gualbert I. Pereira, Secretary General

ASCI, 219 Bombay Market, *

Dear Mr. Pereira,

I heard of the Alpenliebe Toffee advertisement which is recently being

beamed to consumers all around the country. I would request you to kindly

consider the terribly negative impact this would have on a vast section of

the zoo-going public in our country.

Currently, there is practically no protection for the animals in the zoo

where visitors feed them anything from potato chips to razor blades....most

Indian zoos have no effective security measures in place.

For an icon like Kajol to feed toffees to an alligator, would mean that this

behaviour would be seen and emulated by thousands of fans across the

country.

I would request you to kindly take immediate and effective measures to

substantially edit or remove this advertisement.

My letter to you was prompted by an enraged consumer, who wrote in asking to

* " start creating awareness about this idiotic ad or even better stop eating

alpenliebe till the company pulls off this ad from national television! " *

**

Since our organisation, the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

(WRRC)in Bangalore works closely with the local zoo and is also a member of

the State Board of Wildlife in Karnataka, I felt it was only right to first

inform you of the implications this advertisement might have, so that you

can brief the agency and the company to take the right measures.

Also, as ASCI's primary objective is to protect consumers, I presume that it

would also mean to disseminate the right information to them and not

encourage unseemly or anti-welfare messages that may harm them and the

animals/environment at large.

I would be deeply grateful if you can kindly let me know any action that may

be taken on this letter. Also, please do not consider this as a criticism

but as a response to an advertisement that will create a lot of damage to

Indian wildlife.

Thanking you,

yours sincerely,

Suparna Baksi-Ganguly

Member, State Board of Wildlife, Karnataka

Trustee, WRRC - Bangalore

Well irresponsible advertising is all over. It is irresponsible for

this advertiser to suggest that giving any being candy will get them

to calm down and stop being a pest, most likely more children (than

zoo animals) will suffer from this ad as parents will give them candy

to keep them quiet! Or maybe they will try it on their dogs. But

while I am on a soapbox it is good time to remind all Indians that

from what I have seen you eat far too much sugar! Please we need all

of you in this movement strong and healthy to keep going.

Some of the advertisers might be perplexed that we are complaining

after all the animal was treated well so they have improved along

those lines. So any respectful informing that zoo animals are often

given food by the public that is quite harmful to them could be

helpful for future ad campaigns. But as to making a " federal case " of

this is what sometimes give us all a questionable reputation with the

public, however I think that Suparna Ganguly of CUPA's letter was well

done and thanks to her timely action for that.

Just an update on this. The Animal Welfare Board of India has

officially registered a complaint with the ASCI on the Alpenliebe TVC.

This was informed by an email which I recieved from AWBI. The AWBI has

demanded for a scroll on the TVC which says: it is illegal to feed

animals in the zoo and may invite penalty.
