The zoo has the expertise in hand-rearing jumbo calves. However, the chances of its survival were remote since it is weak and is not suckling. It is believed that the baby jumbo might have been separated from its mother from birth. Zoo veterinarian Nanjappa told *The Hindu *that they would do their best to keep the calf alive. All necessary precautions have been taken for its hand-rearing. It is being fed with diluted cow's milk. The calf was down with dys entery after it was shifted to the zoo. " The animal is under round-the-clock observation. Medication and feeding are being looked after by a team, " the veterinarian said, adding that a keeper, experienced in hand-rearing jumbo calves, had been entrusted to rear the calf. The calf, which was rescued from Kodagu forests and shifted to the zoo, died recently. It was shifted when it was 20 days old.
