Guest guest
Tuesday August 21, 2007 - The Star Long-term solution needed LIFTING the export ban will not resolve the monkey-human issue ( " Monkey export ban lifted, " – The Star, Aug18). If new projects and development continue in our forest and hills, the monkeys will have no place to go. We are the ones destroying their habitat and the authorities should search for a long-term solution. Another problem is that humans in urban areas feed the monkeys, making them comfortable with human contact and resulting in the animals stealing from as well as attacking humans. Urban infringement of wildlife is an issue most countries have to tackle, but there are better ways of managing this. MK, Kuala Lumpur. THE Cabinet should not allow the export of monkeys caught in urban areas. Monkeys captured around the city can be sent to Zoo Negara or to Sabah and Sarawak, which have an abundance of natural habitat for them. The breeding of monkeys can be controlled through sterilisation of male monkeys and the use of intrauterine devices in female monkeys. MAK WING TENG, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
