Guest guest
The gun fire is heard far in the woods. From their dilapated huts, with lathis, our bare footed forest guards run to find yet another rhino/ elephant felled by the poachers. Rarer than the rhinos our friends-of-animals cry out to the world to take notice. But like our rhinos/elephants, those emails, the news clippings do not see the light of the day. No one spoke! But today many of our mummified lost-friends were revived from their lairs. The obviously 'secret' potion being a celebrity named Salman Khan (Salman Khan has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for supposedly killing *one*chinkara). All over the news I heard and read- " Salman deserved this, infact more " " The law is equal to all will not spare anyone " . Hahahahahaha.... I couldnt stop wondering if the word 'hypocisy' was coined for these revived mummies. Many may reply saying this would teach others a lesson, it would instill fear in others, would send out a strong message, etc. But I can bet my life....even before you would have finished saying this, another rhino/elephant would have been felled, another poacher let go with *no* fine, *no*penalties *WHATSOEVER* and who would come back tomorrow to kill more. Let me clarify that I am in no way supporting Salman Khan, even willing to overlook all the charities and community services he does for women, widows, terminally ill children more than any other celebrity in India...ill overlook everything and say he was wrong in what he did and is guilty but I was just wondering about the hundreds of the professional poachers? You know deep in your heart as much as I do that this staged arrest is in no way a deterrent for any poacher. I switched channels disgusted at this biased uproar over Salman and bumped into one Mr. Misra. Another breed of opportunist who was trying to sell his idea of converting jungles into hunting ground, breeding centres and wildlife trade as the new age key stones of conservation. Alas out of the frying pan into the fire. So today let us all get together and pray that only celebrities turn and be the only poachers in this world. This way all the poachers hunting down hundreds of endangered animals would be a thing of the past and all the important personalities, top notch legal advocates, government personnels would be right on the tail of these new age ' celebrity *poachers*'. Thanks, Pablo * Kindly do not view this email as one written out of frustration. I have been involved in this field for over a decade and know that this is how the system works.... In the least just give it a thought and ask yourself what you feel about this.
Guest guest
Salman Khan spoke to the press on camera shortly before taking a flight to Jodhpur to surrender before the Court in the Chinkara poaching case where he has been found guilty This is what the actor said : ''A warrant has been apparently issued and as per advice from my lawyers, I am going to Jodhpur to surrender. Nobody has told me to get there but I am going there as a responsible citizen who abides by the law,'' . Link: http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20070023878 & ch=8/25/2007\ %202:28:00%20PM We can clearly see that Salman agrees to the fact that he acknowledges the court order for what he has done and decided to surrender as a law abiding citizen. Considering the fact that Salman has a huge fan following in the country and outside, this does come as a BIG setback for the millions of his fans who were seen in hundreds outside his house, on the roads as his car was moving, in the airports and not to mention the millions glued to their television sets at home and elsewhere. In the past this guy has mesmerised the nation not only with his acting talents but also by his actions to the needy. Yes, people do make mistakes. And nothing is above the law. This is perhaps the message that is once again held high in a country which has perhaps the strongest of laws for the protection of animals, wildlife and their rights. I am sure Salman has learnt a lesson. And considering the fact that he is not a professional poacher like Sansar Chand, I personally strongly believe that if given a chance this MAN who has now learnt a BIG lesson can do wonders to uplift wildlife conservation in this country. This man unlike professional poachers does neither require a rehabilitation also, because the court`s orders after he is found guilty is enough to tell him that he was WRONG. Havent we heard of poachers turned conservationists. In the past another of Bollywood`s superstar who was there to inaugrate the 'Tag-Hueur Elephant Polo Cup' right in the heart of the country's Capital, New Delhi at a time when the Cartier Cup Elephant Polo was a hot debate, also in time decided that what he was doing is wrong and made public appearance on Television saying that personally even he hates riding on any animal for fun. And months later the same Shahrukh Khan was roped in to speak on the Forest Guards of our country to which he said, that the Forest Guards are the real heroes of the nation. Bolywood celebs have a Huge fan following and they simply cannot afford to stay in controversy or bad light. These celebs are equally important for the animal people and other charitable causes. I am confident that Salman Khan has learnt his lesson, and will now be a transformed man if only we ANIMAL PEOPLE allow him to. By running after him and making him a scape goat we will only assist the media in focusing on just this issue of Chinkara poaching whereas the other fresh cases and the ORGANSIED POACHING MAFIA with its evil roots openly wipes out Rhinos, and Elephants away. For media a Salman Khan issue sells. And quite naturally wretched people like Barun Mitra and others will get a platform to speak their evil talk to divert all attentions of the Nation from the other burning issues that dog the wildlife and instead push forward their vested ideoligies of selling of India`s wildlife assets. In in this country Militants are pardoned once they surrender and are welcomed to the mainstream with garlands and traditional scarfs. In a country where hardcore poachers are accepted as a part of mainstream once they surrender. They I am sure a Salman Khan also shall be accepted if at all he desires to work for wildlife conservation after he is out. Those who want to advice Salman Khan and help him contribute to make up for his mistake please so send in your comments to his website below: http://www.salmankhan.net/viewGuestBook.asp Azam Siddiqui On 8/25/07, Pablo <pablo.tachil wrote: > The gun fire is heard far in the woods. Guest guest
I got a couple of emails from people asking me " Are you a fan of Salman? " " You are being a hypocrite in your email " etc... And Azam you can expect the same. So for those people, for whom understanding english and more so understanding the motive of my email has been a drawback let me make it very clear that ANY PERSON INVOLVED IN A WILDLIFE CRIME NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED. I am in *no way* supporting what Salman did and also I do not really care if he is jailed for life.... Because here people burn a granary to search for a pin and feel proud about it. Thats exactly whats happening in his case. I have many a times involved myself (and continue to do so) in wildlife crime investigations even in places like China and Vietnam, risking my life to get footages, snippets of poachers etc... presenting it to the media, police, wildlife agencies and people like you! Emotions that never surfaced then seems to be overflowing now. Its a humble request that people stand up for the rhinos in Kaziranga that are being reduced on a daily basis, the elephants being shot all around the world, etc. These poachers have been identified and even paraded. Direct these emotions to them with the same vigour you are doing in Salman's case without attempting a futile war of words with me. Like I said, dont burn a granary to find for a pin! Wildlife crime is on the rise. Before its too late, before feeling ecstatic that Salman is jailed and foolishly believing that it was a remarkable milestone, think again about our rhinos and elephants crying for everyone's help! Thanks, Pablo. Guest guest
Vick was fighting pitbulls and executing them mercilessly, he claims he only financed the kennels and only executed some of the pits. I think these heartless criminals are fully aware of the law and the inmorality of these practices, yet, they choose to engage in it. Their only regret is getting caught. and they then play the unwilling participant in the drama. Vick had everything; wealth, fans, fame, and was very good at playing football. Thank God for Humane Society and other animal welfare organizations that are looking out for those without a voice and bringing to justice morons like Vick. Guest guest
*Dear Madam,* * Thanks for this. I entirely agree with you. Two wrongs do not make a right and defending a hard core criminal who has not only killed animals but has allegedly mowed down a human by reckless driving not only sends a wrong message to the public but weakens the cause where it involves similar criminals who exploit animals for fun. Salman Khan is a criminal who deserves the severest penalty, with or without media attention, and regardless of his other purported charitable activities. It would be insincere of me to claim that I am not rather shocked by efforts to defend him, since these moves are attempting to defend the indefensible considering the guy has not expressed an iota of regret or remorse for his wrongdoings. Whether he should be welcomed with open arms by the animal welfare community is a matter of conjecture in the future, not in the here and now, when the law is taking its own course. If he has done good deeds, so have the people who exploit elephants by making them play polo. I am glad you expressed your views on this.* * Best wishes,* ** * * On 8/26/07, OAARS <oaars_cares wrote: > > Vick was fighting pitbulls and executing them mercilessly, he claims he > only financed the kennels and only executed some of the pits. Guest guest
Thanks for your email Liz. Yea I think it is a great feat that Vick got Fixed! * " Two wrongs do not make a right " *But my dear friend and colleague Shubroto, apart from you failing to understand the real issue which the mail hoped to bring to forefront, I dont see what was the second wrong :-) Journos generally do not commit the disaster of flipping through pages/ lines and commenting on article/email....I wonder how you of all the people could do that!! Anyways like everyone even you can make a mistake ;-) I wish I could translate in Bengali (native language of Kolkata) that neither Azam or I were/are supporting Salman. * " Salman Khan is a criminal who deserves the severest penalty, with or without media attention, and regardless of his other purported charitable activities " *We are glad that *someone* has been punished for killing a chinkara (hopefully he has and he is lying by saying he has not) even while militant outfit members or hard core poachers who have wiped out villages (humans and animals alike) are pardoned upon *surrender* with freebies like government funds, house to stay even while secretly continuing to do what they know best! I *understand* my friend! Afterall its hard for people to shit focus to bigger issues because they are attracted to the glow of these superSTARs, the mileage it gives them and their organizations. " I am glad you expressed your views on this. " So my dear *friend* even I am glad you expressed your views because they teach me a lesson that I need to work on either *simplifying* my writing style or translate in native languages so that *some *people here understand that for someone like me working *on* anti poaching activities, one poacher less is one hour's rest . All I hope is you focus an iota of this entusiasm in *targetting* the poachers living lavishly all around your place (* Poachers are literally having a field day in the N.E part of *India*where rhinos are being exterminated and no such media coverage, expert comments, jailing, NOTHING is happening*. *Poachers caught are released with no charges against them. Even as I write this email someone must be aiming at another rhino. Please show this enth*usiasm for our RHINOS. Please, befre they go extinct*). Thanks, Pablo.
