Guest guest
<This is being done so that one can recreate species like lions, tigers or cheetahs at will through assisted reproduction or even cloning> Look, here they come. Our self styled GODs who call themselves scientists. This is what the whole scientific community was desperately waiting for and now their dreams seem to see the light of the day>> Extinction of all the endangered species so that they can wave their magic wand and reproduce our wild friends genetically. It is only a matter of time before we can see a whole range of wildlife reproduced genetically to uplift the economic status of this Nation and compete with the likes of China etc to in farming Tigers etc. We already have a section of media people and some in the wildlife protection community lobbying hard to endorse the Chinese- American style of conservation which allows the exploitation of animals only to breed more animals and in return generates unbelievable revenue. Only recently we saw Mr. Barun Mitra a senior journalist desperately stressing on this formula as the ultimate for wildlife conservation in India on a National Television network. Such people who claim to bring revenue at the cost of Tiger farming, culling of elephants etc are much much more dangerous that any dreaded poacher in this country. But the sad thing is, they always manage to evade arrest, or let me put it this way, no arrest warrants seem to get issued for such people, no matter how damaging their comments and ideologies are. The Blackbuck is one of the fastest animals and is also the state animal of Andhra Pradesh. Under the astute eye of the doctors, after a six-month gestation period Blacky, the first black buck to be born after artificial insemination, was finally born. ''This is the first attempt anywhere in the world that is non-surgical, non-invasive. With this, we should be able to increase the endangered black buck population at will,'' SAID G Sivaji, Scientist. At the Hyderabad-based Laboratory for Conservation of Endangered species, scientists are standardizing methodology to create a bank for eggs, sperms, early embryo and tissue cell lines of all endangered species, frozen in time. This is being done so that one can recreate species like lions, tigers or cheetahs at will through assisted reproduction or even cloning. ''We have succeeded in doing electro-ejaculation in tigers, lions and leopards. Now that we have shown that it can be done in wildlife, we hope the authorities will be convinced and will give adequate endangered species to do artificial insemination to produce live lions, tigers, leopards and my ultimate aim is to produce a cloned cheetah,'' said Lalji Singh, Director, CCMB. In March last year, a baby spotted deer called Aishwarya or Spotty was born. That was the first time in India that a wild animal was born after artificial insemination without surgery.
