According to provisions of the Act, transfer of elephants by way of it or by other mode of consideration of commercial nature is prohibited. It is estimated that number of captive elephants in the country is between 3400-3600, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest, S Reghupathy said. The State's request for relaxing the rule to allow sale of elephants is under consideration of the Ministry, Reghupathy said. According to figures with the Ministry, Assam is home to the highest number of domesticated elephants (1253-1290). The entire North Eastern Region has about 1903-1970 domesticated elephants. Meanwhile, the Minister denied reports indicating that amphibians in Assam and North Eastern Region are facing extinction. Meanwhile, the Union Environment and Forest Ministry has confirmed that Kaziranga National Park was among eight sanctuaries proposed for development as new tiger reserves. In principle, approval has been accorded for declaring eight new tiger reserves spread over seven States, based on proposals received and as recommended by the steering committee of Project Tiger in its 37th meeting, S Reghupathy said. According to recommendations, action has been initiated for identifying inviolate areas within the tiger reserves, which involves relocation of villages from such areas, the Minister added.-- Fight captive Jumbo abuse, end Elephant Polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
Guest guest
Azam I would suggest you read through this article. Mind you I am not saying that getting anyone to relax a trade as this would mean exchange of money between hands. It is upto everyone here to interpret!! :-) Thanks, Pablo http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Daily/skins/TOI/navigator.asp?Daily=TOIBG & login=d\ efault & AW=1188462023593 (Times of India article, Bangalore edition, 30th Aug, 2007) *Mantris & their money's worth* Kumaraswamy Is Worth Rs 9 Cr And His Wife Anita Rs 19.14 Cr Anil Kumar M | TNN Bangalore: Just how wealthy are our ministers? If you take a look at the details of the assets and liabilities filed by Karnataka ministers before the Lok Ayukta for 2006-07, it is apparent that their assets have increased since they came to power. Transport minister N Cheluvarayaswamy is at the top. His income has made a gigantic leap on the 'Rich-ter' scale. While his annual income showed just Rs 12.65 lakh last year (2005-06), his monthly income is Rs 11.86 lakh this year (2006-07). Horticulture minister Shashikanth Akkappa Naik's annual income has gone up from Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. Another politician who is on a high is labour minister Iqbal Ansari, who has shares in nearly 20 wine shops. When it comes to vehicles, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy doesn't own any, while tourism minister owns a Volkswagen worth Rs 58.28 lakh. Information obtained under the RTI Act by The Times of India on the ministers' declarations revealed that industries minister Katta Subramanya Naidu's annual income of Rs 2.87 lakh last year has registered a quantum jump — it's now Rs 5.04 lakh. Assets declared by Kumaraswamy indicate that his wife Anita is richer than him. If Kumaraswamy is worth little over Rs 9 crore, Anita is worth Rs 19.14 crore. Besides having a share in built-up area in a commercial area measuring 28,345 square feet costing Rs 6.37 crore, she is the proud owner of a yet- to-be launched Kannada TV channel. Their only son, Nikhil, has investments amounting to Rs 4 lakh. Sriramulu, apart from having a Volkswagen — a declaration which was absent last year — possesses Rs 2 crore worth of government securities. Ansari's share in the nearly 20 wine shops in his constituency Gangavati in Koppal district has fetched him a profit amounting to Rs 1.92 crore this year. Besides, he owns a cable network there. Forest minister C Chennigappa had declared he owned buildings worth Rs 50 crore last year. His assets have now gone up to Rs 97 crore, including a free residential school for the poor and a separate building for orphans. Social welfare minister Balachandra L Jarkiholi has declared he owns four movie theatres, all in Gokak in Belgaum district, worth Rs 70 lakh. Science and technology minister Ramachandra Gowda, interestingly, has shown that he possesses silver articles — all received as gifts during his housewarming ceremony, daughter's wedding, his grandson's birthday and also mementos as a minister. There is not much of a change in the wealth of another rich minister, B Nagaraj Shetty. He owns 40 trucks and has investments running into lakhs. Ministers Alkod Hanumanthappa and Govind M Karjol's love for cattlerearing never seems to end. Alkod has 250 sheep and Karjol 553. Sericulture minister S Shivanna, who runs a local Kannada newspaper in Tumkur, goes a step further to boast owning 100 piglets. * PAISA VASOOL! **Poor chief minister * Kumaraswamy doesn't own any vehicle *Rich transport minister *Cheluvarayaswamy's income goes up by 12 times *Some social welfare *Minister Jarkiholi owns four theatres *Silver medal *Minister Ramachandra Gowda possesses silver articles — all received as gifts *Counting sheep *Ministers Alkod Hanumanthappa and Govind M Karjol have 250 and 553 sheep respectively On 8/30/07, AZAM SIDDIQUI <azam24x7 wrote: > > Link: http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=aug3007/at09 > > State asks Centre to ease rules on elephant sale > > From Our Spl Correspondent > NEW DELHI, Aug 29 – Assam along with Bihar and Kerala have asked the > Ministry of Environment and Forest to relax the prohibition on sale of > elephants by amending the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
