A round of severe beating and the female leopard lay dead on the road in the wee hours of Tuesday, giving Guwahati its first victim of human-animal conflict. Around 3am, the leopard came down from the nearby hills, perhaps in search of food, and entered a house in the Segunbari area of Fatasil Ambari. The sight of the leopard scared the residents, who picked up *lathis* and ran after the animal. " They armed themselves with lathis and then mercilessly killed the leopard, a female aged between five to six years, " a forest official said. Fatasil Ambari police have registered a case in this connection. " The leopard had attacked two persons and the people retaliated by killing the animal, " confirmed conservator of forests (central Assam circle) R.D.S. Tanwar. Forest authorities reached the area around 6.30am after being informed about the incident. The carcass was sent to the state zoo for post-mortem. " This is a disturbing scenario and something needs to be done urgently or else the situation will go out of hand, " a forest official said, adding that destruction of forests was the primary reason behind the leopard's attacks. Guwahati is perhaps the only city in the world with such a huge urban wildlife concentration. On February 3 this year, a leopard injured two persons at Bhaskarnagar in the city. The leopard hid in a house when people spotted him. Earlier this month, three leopard cubs, barely a month old, were beaten to death by labourers of Moubandha tea estate under Pulibor police station in Jorhat.
