First Test for Pet Doctors Held in Guangdong

CRIENGLISH.com

2007-08-30

Forty eight pet doctors attended the first vocation

certificate test held in Guangzhou on Wednesday. The

move has been designed to help regulate the

development of this industry in the future.

Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong

province, has more than 16 million pets. Most pet

owners spend 500 yuan, or 66 U.S. dollars per month on

regular expenditure for their pets and more than 1,000

yuan, or 132 U.S. dollars each year on medical care

and treatment. Even though Guangzhou has 200

registered pet hospitals and 100 pet clinics in 2007,

the city still lack qualified pet doctors. Huang

Qingyun, a professor from College of Veterinary

Medicine of South China Agriculture University, says

some hospitals even hired vets from Taiwan, Hong Kong

and Macau at a high price for about 10,000 yuan, or

1320 U.S. dollars per month.

Manager of the training center of Guangzhou Medical

College, Wang Zhao, says most pet doctors in Guangzhou

are graduates from veterinary or agriculture colleges.

Due to lack of training, malpractice happens

sometimes. Therefore, the training center, under the

permission of relevant government departments,

organized China's first pet doctors certificate test.

Among the 48 participants of the test yesterday, half

are graduates from South China Agriculture University

who are now working in pet hospitals.

The requirement for becoming pet doctors is lower than

that for vets. They do not need to go to universities

for professional training. Anyone who has pet doctor

certificate is allowed to practice. Pet doctors'

income ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 yuan, or 331 to 662

U.S. dollars, per month, while veteran [sic] doctors

can make 8,000 yuan, or 1059 U.S. dollars per month.
