The move is aimed at retrieving the hacked tusk of the 12-year-old male elephant found dead at Khayerkata forest in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri yesterday. " The basic objective is to retrieve the tusk as investigations revealed that some inexperienced persons aware of the ivory value had partially hacked it, " said Kalyan Das, the divisional forest officer (DFO) of Jalpaiguri division. The foresters appealed to the people in the area to hand over the tusk to them or abandon at the place where the carcass was found. " Those who committed the crime will not be arrested. Instead of arresting the suspect or raiding the village, we felt campaigning was a better proposition, " the DFO added. A flash flood that swelled the Diana river had taken the tusker's life, a forester said. " Investigation and a post- mortem on the pachyderm revealed that it floated down the river during a flash flood leading to death because of internal injury, " Das said. Three vets, who conducted the autopsy, said the elephant had ruptures in the body, with blood clots in the heart and left lung. -- Fight captive Jumbo abuse, end Elephant Polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
