Thanks for making that clear - is there any way we can clarify this to the press

and possibly encourage this AIRLINE not to do this ?

This is disgusting. But I hope all the list members realize that this is a

splinter group of Hindus. The vast majority of Hindus abandoned animal

sacrifices in ancient times as did the Jews. Vegetarianism is required of

observant Hindus in many sects, is required of Brahmins and Sannyasis, and is

highly recommended for all.

 

" Akash Bhairav " seems to be a combination of " akasha " which means sky or

space, and " bhairava " which is one of the aspects of Siva. I have never heard of

other sects sacrificing animals to Siva. (There is a Bengali sect that

sacrifices goats to Kali, but again this is a small minority of the Hindu

tradition).

 

In America we have the Spiritista and Santoria splinter sects which seem to

merge Christianity with various other practices and use animal sacrifices, but

this doesn't represent mainstream Christianity any more than the goat

sacrificers represent mainstream Hinduism.

Unfortunately till now virtually all Hindu groups in Nepal practice

sacrifice, especially during festivals. Till recently the government funded

the funded sacrifice of all sorts of animals, including buffaloes, during

Dasain festivals. The royal family does the same. Despite campaigns young

people continue to participate in cruel practices like mass killing of young

buffaloes by drunk youth and the tearing apart of a live goat in a contest.

We have to see what the new government decides about these issues but we are

not overly optimistic. A draft animal welfare law is being completed but

religious sacrifice is being excluded. We hope at least regulations about

transport of animals to the temples will be included.
