Eight nabbed for animal cruelty

Surat Thani _ Police yesterday arrested eight men on Koh Samui on charges of

illegally possessing protected species of wildlife and cruelty to animals.

The eight, suspected to be members of a wildlife smuggling gang, were nabbed

in front of the Green Mango pub on the resort island's Chaweng beach.

Police found in their possession seven gibbons, a python and an iguana.

During the raid, some of the other gang members managed to escape with an

eagle and a crocodile, police said.

The suspects were identified as Islama-ae Klang, 24, Yarla Porji, 22,

Chatchawal Salee, 20, Anand Mangmee, 38, Kriangsak Kitkarn, 28 and Pundit

Sepsabai, 27.

Police, led by Pol Maj-Gen Boonmee Somsuk, commander of the wildlife

protection unit, acted on a complaint filed by Edwin Wiek, director of the

Wildlife Friends of Thailand Foundation.

The rescued animals were put in the care of the foundation.
