The canine was found in the most pathetic state in a Sanpada bungalow on Saturday, with maggots having eaten away one of her eyes, and hanging from her belly, gums and nostrils. Animal volunteers who had responded to requests for help were shocked at the sight of the animal. They sent her to an animal shelter and informed the Turbhe police station. Police inspector S Surve said, " We have registered a case of cruelty under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. " The dog had apparently been with Jay Kumar, an employee in the income tax department, for 12 years. Volunteers from an NGO, In Defence of Animals (IDA) said the animal was in terrible condition. Naina Athale, a volunteer with IDA, said, " The family had dumped the dog in the veranda of a vacant bungalow in the neighbourhood and the animal's wounds were stinking terribly. " Veterinarian Dr Santosh Yadav who is treating the boxer said it was a case of prolonged negligence. " It is a horrifying case. The animal is almost in a coma because of the maggots feeding on almost every part of its body. The family could have definitely sent it to a centre earlier, " Yadav said. The vet also said that the dog had not been given the necessary immunisation. The boxer belongs to Jay Kumar, an income tax officer from Sanpada. When itwas found, maggots had competely eaten away one of its eyes and were attacking its mouth and nostrils (Top left) Maggots taken out of the dog's mouth Meanwhile, Kumar vehemently denies negligence. " We have had this dog for a long time. How can one make such allegations? These people forcibly took away our pet without showing us any warrant. We had called for an ambulance from the Parel hospital as treatment of pets in Navi Mumbai is very costly. The ambulance was delayed and we had called for a taxi and a helper to take the dog when these people started creating a scene, " Kumar alleged. Kumar explained that his wife's illness had been keeping the family busy for the last one month. " My wife was hospitalised, my children were missing school and everything was going haywire. It was only on Friday night that I noticed my pet was suffering and I immediately made arrangements for her treatment. The allegations are baseless and these people are doing it as a publicity stunt, " said Kumar, who claims to have all the records of his pet. *Act of cruelty** * *Prevention* of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Section 11 – Cruelty To Animals The owner who neglects to exercise reasonable care that is likely to cause suffering, pain to the animal then the person shall be punishable with a fine or imprisonment that may extend to three months or both.
