Orissa: Two elephants run over by train

NDTV Correspondent

Thursday, September 20, 2007 (Bhubaneswar)

Two female elephants aged between 30 and 40 were killed after they were run

over by a goods train loaded with iron ore in Orissa's Keonjhar district on

Wednesday.

A tusker, which was severely injured in the accident, has managed to go back

to the forest.

A four-month old baby elephant, which escaped with very minor injuries has

been rescued by forest officials and is being taken to the Nandankanan Zoo

near Bhubaneswar.

The train ran into a wild herd as it was crossing the railway line.

Local people have blamed rampant mining and industrial activity along the

elephant habitat for the tragedy.
